Media Player web address for album info changed in recent Windows 10 upgrade

After a recent major upgrade for Windows 10, my Windows Media Player is trying to find Album information from a new website that does not work.  The old web address was (fai.music.metaservices.microsoft.com) and new web address it is using is (musicmatch-ssl.xboxlive.com) which is not a valid address.  How do I change the web address used for album metadata back to correct address?  Searched old message boards with no luck.

Found a solution that worked for me:

  1. Start regedit.exe
  2. Navigate to "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\TunerConfig"
  3. Look for setting PREFERREDMETADATAPROVIDER -- it should have a value "pmpMusicMatch"
  4. Edit the setting PREFERREDMETADATAPROVIDER, and clear the value so you have a blank value
  5. Save / exit regedit.exe
  6. Restart Windows Media Player, you should be restored back to fai.music.metaservices.microsoft.com

What an unnecessary pain in the proverbial.

Update: this DOES NOT WORK any more.

Microsoft appear to have strangled this option off entirely. We are now stuck with the much lesser offering that is "musicmatch-ssl.xboxlive.com".

Microsoft: thanks for nothing.

    I did a clean Win10 x64 install on an old laptop last week with WMP happily looking up CD info for a day or two.  After a batch of Windows Updates it started saying the fai address didn't exist (I'm presuming it switched at that point) while another laptop I've had for years seemed to be doing just fine.  This morning I got the update to v.1803 2019-05C and things are working again pointing at the xbox site.

    So for the win 10 machine at least, this may just be a waiting game.  Hope you're back up and running soon.

    It was working 3-4 days ago.  I was starting to rip all my CDs after pulling them out of long term storage.  Was about 90% done, now I am a bit stuck unless I want to do all the CD data by hand.

    This is being done on my 64-bit Win 7 machine.  So it was functional very recently on Win7, now its broke on Win7 as well.  My Win10 machine talks to the xbox address listed in this post and that is not working either.  (As I haven't ripped CDs on my Win10 machine, I can neither confirm, nor deny whether this function was working at the time it was working on my Win7 machien).  I assume both links are just DNS aliases for the same server housing the metadata.  It wouldn't make sense to have two servers with similar databases on it, running from the MS Cloud.
