The newest build of System Mechanic - version 18.02.486 -- released in mid-October 2018 finally puts an end to this most irritating problem.
It appears to be safe to use System Mechanic again.
Program or background process popup keeps appearing

For days I've been getting this popup window on my Windows 10 Build 1803 computer:
"The program or a background process quit unexpectedly. Would you like to send information to a developer?"
It occurs intermittently, often every 5-10 minutes, and is EXTREMELY annoying. When I click on it, it disappears with no results but keeps reappearing. I cannot figure out what program is causing this as all programs I use are accounted for. The machine has been scanned several times and there is no sign of virus or malware. There have been no new programs installed and Windows and all drivers are current. It's a total loss to me what this is.
Anyone have any idea?

2018-10-03T12:59:16+00:00 I ended up turning active care off and doing it manually. It stopped the popup issue but it's not a fix, just a way to live with the problem. An earlier post states that Iolo is aware of the problem and will be addressing it in the next product update. Unfortunately, their updates are few and far between.

2018-10-03T05:24:48+00:00 Limiting hours that System Mechanic runs in the background solves the popup message during those times I've chosen not to let it run, but it doesn't solve the problem. Iolo, System Mechanic's vendor, needs to solve the core issue. Only then will the problem be truly solved in my opinion.

If you have System Mechanic on your PC, that is the cause. Go to Settings-ActiveCare-Exceptions and select the hours when you do not wish System Mechanic to run in the background and your problem is solved.

2018-09-17T18:03:58+00:00 I agree with others that this issue is related to System Mechanic. In fact I can get the error message to appear ( after a restart ) just by opening System Mechanic. Also....I often find the error message on the screen if I leave my PC for a few minutes.....and it is during those few minutes when the PC is not busy that System Mechanic runs its various checks. Best thing to do, until Iolo do a fix, is to switch off ActiveCare and just do manual repairs.....I mean it's not like the software really needs to run the checks every time your PC is inactive anyway...it is superfluous.
Thanks for the feedback... have been using SM for years... quite disappointed with iOLO at this point.
