Good afternoon all,
Ingredients req....
1000% Patience
A was working computer with LAN connection
A working computer with at least 16gb free space.
A usb memory stick 32gb . (Thumb drive)
A LAN cable
At least 4/5 hours free time
A good book to read.
On the good computer, go to microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10.
Select update (top of the page).
Follow the instructions but if asked 32 or 64 bit option select both.takes about 30 mins.
Once loaded on to memory stick....
Open up the computer to be fixed, and after you have logged on(if req.) Wait until black screen then..
Plug in both LAN cable if poss & memory stick
Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up Task Manager, file-new task,
Browse your mem stick, open files up, select either setup.exe or Boot and run.
This should now activate win10 update assistant and follow onscreen instructions.
This stage took me about 2hrs as computer is old and slow.
Once the update is downloaded windows will install and during this time it will restart several times.
Once this stage is complete it will then restart and go through the motions of preparing windows with a few options to the user.
Now comes an intresting part, the repaired computer worked fine all files etc are there but the update had knocked out the usb ports hence no external hard drive to backup to or wired mouse !
So into device manager i go uninstall usb's with yellow warnings pc asks for restart, do that then plug in ext hd dv ab and wired mouse hey presto both recognised and working.
Now able to complete backup.
Yes this does seem a long-winded solution but it does work.
Good luck to all of you who are going to use the above method and thanks again to all who helped me to get to this solution.
