File Explorer may not detect other devices or perform file sharing on the local network when running Windows 10 version 1803

After installing the Windows 10 April 2018 Update (Windows 10 version 1803), File Explorer cannot connect to other devices running version 1803.  When clicking the Network tab in File Explorer, other devices on the home network running version 1803 do not appear, and thus I’m not able to perform file sharing or access files on other devices on my home network.

Microsoft is aware of reports that devices running Windows 10 version 1803 cannot connect to other devices on their home network and is investigating the issue.

You can resolve this problem by setting some services to Automatic (Delayed Start) and restarting Windows:

  1. Press the Windows Key and R at the same time to bring up the Run dialog.
  2. Type services.msc in the Run dialog and press Enter.
  3. For each of the following services, locate the service in list, right-click the service and select Properties.  Then set the Startup type to Automatic (Delayed Start) and select Apply.
    • Computer Browser (Browser)
    • Function Discovery Provider Host (FDPHost)
    • Function Discovery Resource Publication (FDResPub)
    • Network Connections (NetMan)
    • UPnP Device Host (UPnPHost)
    • Peer Name Resolution Protocol (PNRPSvc)
    • Peer Networking Grouping (P2PSvc)
    • Peer Networking Identity Manager (P2PIMSvc)
  4. Restart Windows.

    Otherwise, file sharing is completely disabled in Windows 10.

    It isn't. Just follow the solution. Unless you have old devices that do not know smbv2 or smbv3, Windows 10 has filesharing without a Computerbrowser and without smbv1. Windows 8 knows smbv2 and 3.

    You don't need Computerbrowser. It gets automatically removed when smbv1 gets removed. And you shouldn't reinstall smbv1 because of security ramifications.

    Thank you for all your suggestions. I appreciate the help. For some reason, I still can't seem to add this new printer to the network, but at least the computer it's attached to can recognize it now! I've followed all suggestions, from Microsoft as well as you and ltcjwb. I must be missing something somewhere, but after spending the better part of two days at what should be a relatively minor task, my nerves are pretty well shot, and my frustration level is over the moon!!!! I'm sure you can relate! So at this point I'm thinking I could have made mistakes somewhere. I'll get back to it in a couple of days, after several glasses of wine and doing less frustrating things like cooking and vacuuming the house!! Thanks again!!    Priscilla Nelson

    I did. Disabled SMB, then made all the recommended changes.  Lost all file sharing.  Reenabled SMB, file sharing is back.  Why are we having this problem?  Why did MS release an update which disallowed file sharing on Win 10 systems?  That is a non-starter!  Why has MS not released a corrective update which restores file sharing?  Unacceptable!
