Since updating to Windows 1803, system protection does not work.  Restore will not restore from the restore point created during the update.  Nor will it restore from any new restore point I create.  I get the message: 

System Restore did not complete successfully.  Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details:

System Restore failed to extract the file (<the path on my system>\OneDrive) from the restore point.  An unspecified error occurred during the System Resotre. (0x8007018b)"

This is the same result if I attempt to restore to the point that the Windows 1803 upgrade occurred.  And if I attempt to restore to a point I created immediately after the upgrade.  And if I attempt to restore to a point created immediately before I attempt to restore to it.  In other words.  It is not possible for me to create a restore point and restore to it.

On the rare occasions when I attempted a restore in the past, it worked okay.

I tried this on another machine also recently updated to Windows 1803.  The restore point creation then restoration worked correctly.  The only obvious difference between the two is that the machine on which the restore worked had only a C:\ drive.  The machine on which the restore fails uses a restore point that covers two drives and the OneDrive file that cannot be recovered is on the non-C: drive.

    I have the exact same problem. And i would guess many others do to, they just dont know it yet. It'll be a nice suprise for them when they actually need to do a restore and realize it dosn't work.

    I wonder for how long microsoft is going to ignore the fact that one of their own software is breaking the windows restore functionality.

    I thought I would be safe from malware and other types of winows failures since i take daily restore points, untill i realized non of the them actually work, since i always have onedrive running.

    I agree.  Pending a permanent solution, Microsoft restore function should at least check to see if OneDrive is running and open a warning window at the time a restore point is created.

    I have, At least i think I have, exactly the problem that you describe. I need to roll back to a restore point that was made by the system while Onedrive was enabled. It fails saying that there is problem restoring one file that was to be synchronized with my one dirive. But the file was not complete syncronized  when the restore point was created. Anyone that have a solution for this?

    apaolle, these forums can help sometimes.  At other times when there is no response from MIcrosoft I tend to believe that there is no current fix for this issue.  The only thing I am doing now is to try to be as careful as I can so as not to require any restore, as I can't  do it.

    I've had this problem with system restore for as long as I can remember with Windows 10, and have had to reinstall windows from USBbecause this problem has actually prevented Windows 10 reset from working too!

    Microsoft Windows has this nice functionality to protect you when Windows dies, but you can't use it if you are using Microsoft cloud software.

    Good job MS and what do your QA and testing teams actually do ?

    I don't understand why it's even failing as its "users" folder so should be data, except that now even MS programs/software gets installed into this location due to UAC.

    Of course installing new software will create an automatic restore point that wont work because it won't disable one drive nor prompt you. 

    On the plus side, once you have a USB image, it only takes half hour to install.
