Display anomalies following update to Windows 10 v.1803

A number of users have reported display anomalies following the April update to Windows 10. Only one user has so far posted a screenshot illustrating the phenomenon, and it's reproduced here:

Microsoft is not concerned about problems with unsupported software, so we're on our own here. With a concerted effort, we should be able to crack this, but it means we need some data to act on. I hope you'll be willing to help out.

One user has reported that rolling back his graphics driver to an older version solved the problem, so it seems that the phenomenon is a result of an unfortunate driver update. To troubleshoot the problem, then, with a view to finding a solution, would affected users please reply here with the information requested. In the post below this one on page 1 of this thread, there is a data-entry table. Please click theReply button below the table, and then select Reply with quote so that you have the table already in your post. Click in each User's data cell and enter your information. Add any supplementary information you think may be relevant and thenSubmit. Good luck!

EDIT a few days later

Many thanks to those who posted details of their environment. I think we have enough data now to establish that only users with older Intel integrated graphics and using Intel driver 8.15.10.2697 are affected. One user reports that using an older version of this driver worked, while another reports that it didn't. There is a generic driver available on the Intel website, but we've yet to hear whether anyone has tried it out. If Windows Live Mail behaves with this driver installed, well and good, but there may be a price to pay in terms of performance degradation in other applications - Photoshop, for example, or PowerPoint. Gaming won't be as much fun, I suspect, and non-native screen resolution may not be available.

I would like to try your fix but is it possible that you could walk me step by step through it as I am certainly no computer-whiz!! I did look to see what I have on my computer & it is Intel (R) Pentium (R) Dual CPU #2180 64-Bit if any of that is helpful. Any clearer

Here is a one click solution:

fix-live-mail.zip

Open fix-live-mail.zip and double-click the "runme" file inside.

This script will copy d3d10level9.dll from Windows 10 Version 1709

into the program directory of Windows Live Mail.

You should (hopefully) see the message "completed without error"

after running this script.

I found a solution for this strange Problem on my old Intel 945 Express Chipset.

I've copied d3d10level9.dll from Windows 10 Version 1709 into the Program Directory of Windows Live Mail (C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail) on Windows 10 Version 1803 and everything is back to normal!

As I wrote in my previous post, there is no need messing around with other graphic drivers.

Just copy d3d10level9.dll from the previous Windows Version directly into the executable directory of Windows Live Mail (C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail) and Live Mail will look normal again on latest April Update.

Here is a copy of this old dll:

Hi Chloe

I think drummachine's (DM's) script of June 19 won't work now because the old version of Windows10 is normally automatically deleted 10 days after the update.

So here's a step by step using DM's copy of the .dll file that fixes Windows live Mail (WLM)

1.To download the magic WLM fixing .dll . . .

In your own post of July 17, (page 9 or just above this reply), where DM's text says:

"Here is a copy of the old .dll"

just click the coloured d3d10level9.zip

This opens One Drive in your browser and shows a picture like this:

Click this picture and a Save As dialog opens; save the .zipped folder somewhere convenient (I used the folder suggested by the dialog, called d3d10level9, too) and close the One Drive stuff in your browser.
1. Now, to unzip the zip folder . . .
Go to the place where you saved the .zipped folder and click it; you will see the .dll now in the folder.

Right click the .dll and click Copy.
1. Finally, to put the .dll in the right place to fix the WLM problem . . .
(In File Explorer) select MyPC or ThisPC or whatever yours is called and click the system drive, usually C:

Scroll down + click Program Files(x86)

Scroll down + click Windows Live

Click Mail . . . you'll see the files that WML uses . . .

and then click Paste, top left.

You should now see d3d10level9.dll listed among those files.

That's it, all done, close all dialogs and when you next run WLM all should be well.
