Display anomalies following update to Windows 10 v.1803

A number of users have reported display anomalies following the April update to Windows 10. Only one user has so far posted a screenshot illustrating the phenomenon, and it's reproduced here:

Microsoft is not concerned about problems with unsupported software, so we're on our own here. With a concerted effort, we should be able to crack this, but it means we need some data to act on. I hope you'll be willing to help out.

One user has reported that rolling back his graphics driver to an older version solved the problem, so it seems that the phenomenon is a result of an unfortunate driver update. To troubleshoot the problem, then, with a view to finding a solution, would affected users please reply here with the information requested. In the post below this one on page 1 of this thread, there is a data-entry table. Please click theReply button below the table, and then select Reply with quote so that you have the table already in your post. Click in each User's data cell and enter your information. Add any supplementary information you think may be relevant and thenSubmit. Good luck!

EDIT a few days later

Many thanks to those who posted details of their environment. I think we have enough data now to establish that only users with older Intel integrated graphics and using Intel driver 8.15.10.2697 are affected. One user reports that using an older version of this driver worked, while another reports that it didn't. There is a generic driver available on the Intel website, but we've yet to hear whether anyone has tried it out. If Windows Live Mail behaves with this driver installed, well and good, but there may be a price to pay in terms of performance degradation in other applications - Photoshop, for example, or PowerPoint. Gaming won't be as much fun, I suspect, and non-native screen resolution may not be available.

I would like to try your fix but is it possible that you could walk me step by step through it as I am certainly no computer-whiz!! I did look to see what I have on my computer & it is Intel (R) Pentium (R) Dual CPU #2180 64-Bit if any of that is helpful. Any clearer

Here is a one click solution:

fix-live-mail.zip

Open fix-live-mail.zip and double-click the "runme" file inside.

This script will copy d3d10level9.dll from Windows 10 Version 1709

into the program directory of Windows Live Mail.

You should (hopefully) see the message "completed without error"

after running this script.

I found a solution for this strange Problem on my old Intel 945 Express Chipset.

I've copied d3d10level9.dll from Windows 10 Version 1709 into the Program Directory of Windows Live Mail (C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail) on Windows 10 Version 1803 and everything is back to normal!

As I wrote in my previous post, there is no need messing around with other graphic drivers.

Just copy d3d10level9.dll from the previous Windows Version directly into the executable directory of Windows Live Mail (C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail) and Live Mail will look normal again on latest April Update.

Here is a copy of this old dll:

I've also had the same problem since the latest update. I may also try some of the suggestions.

However, I'm also a long time member of Cloudeight InfoAve (http://thundercloud.net/infoave/premium/2018/week-764.htm). They are a help website, and their newsletters are free (membership is free, too). They recently posted a reply to a member who also had concerns. I'm just going to paste it here, as it is fairly self-explanatory, and I thought someone might just benefit from this:

Dear good folks that we all rely on so much. Have still not performed/allowed the major Windows 10 Update that was found to have some serious bugs. But it's been a few weeks now, and am thinking it may be time.

My biggest concern is that the Windows Live Mail program that have been using since the beginning of Windows 10 is going to be eliminated. Have grown so accustomed to using it ... and that's always when Microsoft seems to take things away completely.

Could you tell me if this is the case ... whether there will be no method for saving the old Windows Live Mail software.

Hi Johanna. Thanks so much for your kind words.

Windows Live Mail is already a problem. Microsoft has not updated Windows Live Mail since 2012 and has not supported it since 2014. Whether or not it works in the new version of Windows 10 (version 1803), we don't know. We have not used Windows Live Mail for a long time. What we can tell you is that it is almost certain that eventually it won't work - and once it stops working you can't reinstall it anymore ... so the thing to do is be proactive and do something while it's still working.

You can download and install Thunderbird (it's free). You can set up your email accounts and import your email messages and contacts from Windows Live Mail. Thunderbird is similar to Windows Live Mail and continually being updated and will continue to be developed an supported. Also, setting up Thunderbird as IMAP instead of POP3 ensures you'd never lose any email.

We offer a Thunderbird Email set up service. We'll set up Thunderbird, configure up to 3 email account (as IMAP), import your mail and contacts from Windows Live Mail. If you're interested in this service, you can get more information at http://thundercloud.net/direct/tbird .

Taking the right steps right now means you will not be living on the edge with your email. With Windows 10 you can skip this update, but eventually you'll have to update or you'll be using an unsupported version of Windows 10 - and you don't want that. Windows 10 versions are supported for approximately 18 months. So the version you're using right now (Version 1709 Fall Creators Update) will be supported by Microsoft until April 2019... after that you'll have to upgrade. So, you have time.
