Failure to install Windows 10 April Update(version 1803)

Yea, I'm also having issues. I never got build 1803 to work. It kept trying to download and install but failed every time. It eventually stopped popping up as an update. I tried to install the ISO, tried the Media Creation thing. Nothing worked. Now, I am seeing build 1809 installing as I write this. So I guess 1803 is bypassed for me. Maybe due to compatibility issues. Who knows. I have alot of history with Microsoft. I hate depending on this software but it drives alot of computers within my own family and friend circles, which I seem to be supporting for everyone. I am a tech guru of sorts but really, time is not always easy to put aside for troubleshooting computer software these days.  I am not one who enjoys dealing with Microsoft when it comes to support.  I got a story....

It took me almost 4 or 5 years to finally get a Retail Windows 7 Ultimate license issue resolved and so many different people I dealt with tried to charge me to buy a new license but I already had an Official Authentic Retail License that I paid close to $400 for at a local store. Turns out that Microsoft saw I installed my copy of Windows 7 Ultimate several times over the course of my first year owning it and they have detection systems in place that blacklisted me from using my own software. Apparently they think I was installing it on several systems but, I actually had that right anyway since the systems were mine and according to my license, as long as I was only using 1 system at a time, they couldn't say ****!. But they still made my life a living hell and I never stopped hounding them until they finally gave me another CODE to type in and make my Windows GENUINE again. Truth is, I install my OS alot when I am trying to configure multiple drives and then set up multiple boot for different versions of Windows. A hard drive fails and i am forced to install my OS again. If I want a clean slate, I install it again. It's not my fault they were paranoid about piracy. But look at how it is now. They GIVE it away. Windows 10 doesn't really cost anyone a penny as long as they have digitial licenses. You can still install/upgrade Windows 10 on any new system or older one with Win 7 or 8, and get the Windows 10 for nothing and it validates it as a Genuine Digital license. I for one will never buy a Microsoft software ever again. I was one who always paid for full version CDs and still have each and every one of them since Windows 95, with respective licenses and OEM codes. I even have my Dos 6.22/Win 3.11 floppy disks which I also made CDs with but I gave them all their money for all of it and they jerked me around for almost 5 years trying to charge me another $299 which decreased to $199 by year 4 or so and eventually I ended up calling some other department that said I should have been transferred to them in the first place in order to get this expedited properly. So, Microsoft is full of so many people in so many departments in so many countries that the left hand never knows what the right hand is even doing. Bill Gates left Microsoft because of how poorly things were being handled. One day he checked his email using his office computer and had so many errors within his very own Windows software that he said to himself.... "This is what we created"? He vowed from that day that he was not going to captain this ship for much longer. And sure enough, he slowly bailed owed and left those people who were running it to their own vices. They almost failed but something as big as the OS that changed the world was not easily put to death. It just needed to be managed and sure enough, after a few more major fk ups, they got their sht together. But not before screwing us with Windows 8, then 8.1, and although I felt they were so far from being capable, I give credit where credit is due... Windows 10 is the real deal. Unfortunately this is so big. The world is being controlled more by this software than all the governments and secret societies combined. I see Linux Distros in my near future

I just finished trying to install 1809 and it too has failed just the same way as 1803. Both failed while in the home stretch with an error saying "A component failed to load and operation could not be completed" or something like that. An undo procedure removed all the updates and reinstated my previous setup, which is build 1709. Some insight though.....

I found an error in device manager while looking for a reason why my networks were not showing. Once in device manager, I saw an error under network adapters. The Microsoft Virtual WiFi Mini Port adapter could not load. But, my Netgear A6200 driver seemed to be in tact even though it was not actually working since no networks were being detected. So I just re-installed the driver for this Netgear USB WiFi adapter from within device manager using "update driver" "browse" and "let me pick" at which point the latest driver was already showing and I just selected it anyway, and installed. I have to do this same procedure for this specific adapter from time to time. Call it a glitch if you like. It's an older one. But it's stable for the most part and very fast. Annny Way

Updating this Netgear WiFi adapter driver gave me networks and.... it actually fixed the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Mini Port Adapter error as well. I am getting a brainstorm here now. Is it possible this error with Microsoft's WiFi Virtual Mini Port Adapter is also related to the error preventing builds 1803 and 1809 from installing? I think it's very possible and even likely. I have to think like this because no other symptoms are present and it seems to be relative. Soooo

I am gonna try to remove the adapter and install Windows 1809 via USB stick. This Netgear USB WiFi adapter has some install rules where Netgear insists that the adapter cannot be instalIed while installing the software. I tried and it hangs every time until I pull the adapter. So, if during the update to these new builds, this driver is loading or trying to load, and the adapter is still plugged, based on what I know, the software will not load that driver. Not until I pull the adapter first. Once I do, the remainder of driver install completes and then I can install the A6200 WiFi adapter into the respsective USB port. When build 1809 failed for being unable to load a component, and the device manager showed Microsoft WiFi mini port also saying "unable to load " and due to the rules for installing this driver and adapter, and since the error in Device manager points to this Netgear adapter affecting the Microsoft Virtual WiFi  Mini Port, I think I may have good reason to suspect this is the cause. I sure hope. I recently started using this adapter due to the failure of the ASUS WiFi adapter I was using for a few years I never had a failure installing Windows builds with ASUS either.

Man, troubleshooting is no easy task. And alot of issues are discovered by mistake or in my case, if I am right, it's just my good luck something pointed me in this direction. And so many other people just have different issues that it's so hard to say which issue is related to a specific problem. I will report back with my result to better confirm this for anyone else that might have a similar problem. A few days probably as I want to replace my hard drive to a larger one anyway. And one more thing I was wondering. I have only a small amount off remaining disk space. And Windows update files from prior successful updates on my system were removed using disk cleanup long ago due to disk space constraints. So, we all know how a copy of our current Windows is sorta backed up to the root drive and remains there for at least 30 days so Disk space might be of importance to accommodate this. Maybe we might need a few additional GIGABYTES of hard disk space to ensure an upgrade will work? Just a thought. I'd do a disk cleanup before trying to update. Obviously a fresh install does not apply here but I just wanted to mention another possible scenario.

Oh No, they're not trying to force feed 1809 again, I thought they'd pulled it!  Having spent months getting through to1803 I'm saying behind my 'Metered connection.

They will, next year, or the following year and a half. Meantime, 1803 works for me.
