Failure to install Windows 10 April Update(version 1803)

Can MS be more prudential when releasing updates?? My 5-month old HP laptop with an intel SSD crashed due to 1803 updates. The SSD is not recognized anyhow by the computer and has to be replaced with a new one. The data on the old drive is lost completely. Aweful experience!

I"ve only got 1 of my 3 PC's to actually successfully update to 1803 so I disabled updates till an updated fix or update comes out which will hopefully resolve the problematic update. What I don't think a lot of people realize, myself included, is that this is a major Windows update with lots of underlying changes that can affect your existing software and drivers, etc.. on current PC systems. Even the laptop that was successful with the 1803 update, is showing errors in the logs of the touchpad software on laptop crashing after the update, so I"m guessing my laptop manufacturer and other's will need to release updated drivers, software to work smoothly with this latest version of Windows. This would also explain people ending up with unbootable systems since critical drivers probably need to be updated before working with this latest version of Windows.

p.s. You can only stop or "pause" updates as MS calls it if you are running the Pro version of Windows 10. In that case just look for advanced settings in windows update section.

How to Pause Windows 10 Updates for Up to 35 Days

• Open the Start Menu.
• Select Settings.
• Click Update & Security.
• Choose Advanced options under Windows Update.
• Toggle the Pause button to On.

I spent a lot of time with Microsoft support on this. They finally conceded that there were a lot of problems installing this, and that some customers were left with unbootable systems.

The big problem for me was that whenever I got my system up and running, it immediately tried to update again. MS had to use a special diagnostic program and a secret code to hide the 1803 update so that would stop.

That last is something worth knowing, but they seem to keep it locked.

The official story is that there is a fixed version of the update coming.

Microsoft update process is flawed. Had 1709 working perfectly. Have the ISO for 1709 and that installs clean fine.

Along comes 1803 (which for all intents should be classed nothing more than Beta software) and is fails. Even the ISO of it can't even install from a clean boot for me!

So 1803 is no longer on the time line! My Windows 7 machine never had these problems and like you is now the one in use for all my work.

It's good to know that at least I am part of a growing crowd of dissatisfied users. Thanks for the info about the ISO. I wont try it.

Windows 7 is running great. Actually I Have Linux Mint on a hard drive. Maybe it's time to give it a go. It has definately improved in the area of plug and play.

Yup my windows 7 machine is now my prime box.  I have downloaded the media creation tool for 1803 but until I see the "dust settle"  over 1803 I will not attempt even that method. At least not until I have copied all my data to somewhere safe from the volatility of Windows 10. I guess I am halfway to being a computer geek. I do wonder, how ever does the man-in-the street cope with windows 10. Perhaps he simply buys another pc and starts again.

This update is not particularly technical, I know but... Why oh why have windows created such a mess.
