Failure to install Windows 10 April Update(version 1803)

Thank you for your suggestions.  In my multiple tries to get going with the update from version 1709 to 1803 in the past , I do recall, but not exactly, having gone along the route outlined in the first part of your suggestion, without success. I even downloaded version 1803 from a Windows website, had it successfully installed and used for just over a week where-after Windows Update {WU) overwrote it and sent me back to version 1709. Thereafter when I attempted to install it  for the 2nd time from my USB drive, WU returned a message that it was an incorrect version.

WU,, it seems, wants me to stick to version 1709, because it has been providing updates for version 1709 right up to the present day. For example, just about half an hour ago, the following appeared on my WU  window: 

"• 2019-02 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x86-based Systems (KB4486996)

Status: Awaiting restart."

Although the update  is dated for February 2019, it was downloaded today when I opened Windows Update. You will observe that they are providing updates to version 1709 right up to at least February this year. This seems to indicate that if one has version 1709, one should stick to it seeing that 1709 is being kept up to date.

Having expended a considerable amount of time and effort, without any joy, I have decided to let Windows Update do its thing.

I have tried all that. I can't even do a clean install the machine will not reboot when it needs too after the installation is halfway finished. The hard drive just sits there and spins, and stuck on icon. No matter what you do, it will not go in. Now, yesterday, windows update downloaded the update again, although it has been paused and took up a lot of my disk space more or less 15 gigs. and it is just sitting there saying needs a reboot to install, but when the machine is rebooted, it does nothing. I will just leave it as it is as the system is useless just like all os from Microsoft have been.

None of the generic instructions work for most machines. They only work on a few. Those that truly have a problem are out of luck. I have been trying to upgrade to 1809 since it came out. The process only takes away from my workday. I use Linux for all but games now.

Thanks for the above instructions. I worked through them exactly as stated. The result was a fail to install, as "another version of update was already in progress". I checked and launched the windows troubleshooter, did the fixes it found to get the same result.

I've deleted the software distribution folder, stopped windows update via services and I'm using windows update assistant again, which might try updating to version 1809.

Edit - that produced the usual response - a few restarts followed by undoing all the changes - staying at version 1709

You should upgrade to 1803 manually.

1. Right click on Windows Start > Windows Powershell (Admin)

Type following (or copy and paste following) one by one and Enter

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

2. Type following in Windows Start Search box and hit Enter %systemroot%\Logs\CBS > Rename CBS.Log to something else.

If it doesn't allow you to rename - Type services in Windows Start Search box > Click Services > Scroll down to find the Windows Modules Installer service and double-click on it > Set its startup type to Manual > Reboot your computer

Go to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS > Rename CBS.Log > Reboot your computer > Then go back into the Services App and set Windows Modules Installer Service back to Automatic Startup (Note CBS log files contain information about windows update, SFC etc)

3.1 Click Update now to update to 1803 through Upgrade Assistant.
