Windows 8.1 Update KB4340558 Fails with Error Code 80092004

Today Microsoft released six updates, but I was only able to get five to successfully install. The sixth update -- KB4340558 -- continually fails with error code 80092004.

The full name of the update is:

Security and Quality Rollup updates for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, and 4.7.1 for Windows 8.1, RT 8.1, and Server 2012 R2 (KB 4340558)

In an attempt to correct this error, I have:

  1. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
  2. Run"dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth"
  3. Stopped and restarted services pertaining to Wnidows Update -- wuauserv, bits, cryptsvc

But none of these steps resolved the problem.  This particular update downloads, but simply fails to install.

I did a clean reinstall a couple of months ago, so I do not think my system is at fault here.

Is anyone else experiencing the same problem with this update?

    On Windows 8.1 64 bit, experiencing the problem described, "Windows 8.1 Update KB4340558 Fails with Error Code 80092004".  I had a hunch that it was somehow related to last months optional "Preview of Quality Rollups..." for .NET Framework.  Note, that once installed, you cannot readily and easily uninstall some of these rollups.  So, I had to use System Restore to roll back the machine to a date before I installed the Preview of Quality Rollups, which was June 20, for me.  Upon reboot, ran Windows Update, and was able to install all of the security updates, including KB4340558.  Hope this helps.

    The System Restore option worked for me.  I now have all latest security updates installed.  Thank you for posting your solution!

    I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. MADE SOME PROCIGERS OFERDE BY MICROSOFT ARTICLES BUT NOTING HELPS

    DURING THOSE PROSIGERS LOST THE UPDATE HISTORY/

    I ANDERSTUDE THATE THER IS SOME COLUTHEN WITH A LAST MONTH UPDATE, BUT IF THER IS NO UPDATE HISTORY I CANT REMUVE OLD UPDATES.

    SO, WHAT TO DO????

    I am having this same issue at 2 locations. ONe network has 30 Win 8.1 stations that none of them will take this update. Tried the "solutions" on three of them only to quit after workstation 3 since it's quite obvious I've wasted enough time for nothing already.

    THe other network location has 15 Win 8.1 stations and Server 2012R2. Same for every computer includthe server at this location. Only logical conclusion is that this update is broke. You are not going to convince me that I have 46 computers at two physically separate locations with the same exact problems and error messages, that the problem is on my end.
