Windows 8.1 Update KB4340558 Fails with Error Code 80092004

Today Microsoft released six updates, but I was only able to get five to successfully install. The sixth update -- KB4340558 -- continually fails with error code 80092004.

The full name of the update is:

Security and Quality Rollup updates for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, and 4.7.1 for Windows 8.1, RT 8.1, and Server 2012 R2 (KB 4340558)

In an attempt to correct this error, I have:

  1. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
  2. Run"dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth"
  3. Stopped and restarted services pertaining to Wnidows Update -- wuauserv, bits, cryptsvc

But none of these steps resolved the problem.  This particular update downloads, but simply fails to install.

I did a clean reinstall a couple of months ago, so I do not think my system is at fault here.

Is anyone else experiencing the same problem with this update?

    I am having exactly the same problem. The update won`t install.

    I was able to fix this:

    https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/Reset-Windows-Update-Tool-402a3eef

    I was able to resolve this today with MS support.

    What they did:

    1. reset the windows update tool - the tech downloaded resetWUEng.zip (https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/Reset-Windows-Update-Tool-402a3eef) - and ran (I gather this is the same a using the troubleshooter on windows update, which I did, and which resets several errors, but which did not work for me)
    2. Downloaded the update manually and ran: 

    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4340558

    note; I am using the 2nd download, windows 8.1, not the server version.

    1. I had to go into windows update and hide the KB4340558

    The tech thought the update that is downloaded via the regular update mechanism might be corrupted.

    I have the same problem.

    Installation of KB4340558 always fails on all my 3 Win 8.1 Professional machines with error code 80092004. 

    Considering available posts on www I conclude the package to be faulty.

    Microsoft, please fix!
