Windows 8.1 Update KB4340558 Fails with Error Code 80092004

actually for me what is causing the same error code is Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2 for Windows 8.1 (KB4054566)

Dear all those affected users,

I finally found a solution.

I was also one of the affected like you do with this problem but now the problem is SOLVED..

Till today's date (27th July, 2018), Microsoft has released several updates.

Step 1: In Windows Update section, "set to automatically install updates".

Step 2: Click "Check now" to search for the latest windows updates.

Step 3: Click on all those important updates to be downloaded and installed onto the system.

Step 4: Do NOT click  or (untick) the problematic update to be installed -- Security and Quality Rollup updates for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, 4.7.1, and 4.7.2 for Windows 8.1, RT 8.1, and Server 2012 R2 (KB 4340558).

Step 5: After all the important Windows updates are downloaded and installed successfully, restart the system.

Step 6: Click "Check now" again in the Windows update to search for updates.

Step 7: This time ONLY Download and install an optional update which shows on the screen July 18, 2018—KB4338831 (Preview of Monthly Rollup). After downloading and installing, restart the system.

Step 8: Now after successfully installing KB4338831, it should fix the problem. Now you can successfully install Security and Quality Rollup updates for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, 4.7.1, and 4.7.2 for Windows 8.1, RT 8.1, and Server 2012 R2 (KB 4340558) without any problem.

Quick fix is to install KB4338831 before KB4340558. That's how it works...

When I try to download KB4340558 directly from the Microsoft Update Catalog as you suggest, I am presented with three downloads.  When I try to download them, all indicate that they are not relevant to my system.

I had the same problem, then this fix worked for me on 2 different servers. I believe this to be the fix. Please confirm you tried this.

Workaround 2

Uninstall the June 2018 Preview of Quality Rollup updates KB 4291497 or KB 4291495, run the DISM cleanup tool, and then reinstall the July 2018 Security and Quality Rollup updates KB 4340557 or KB 4340558, as appropriate. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Installed Updates.
2. Locate the line item for either KB4229726or KB4229727, as appropriate.
3. Right-click the row item, and then click Uninstall.
4. Restart the computer as requested.
5. At an administrative command prompt, run the following command:

DISM.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

1. Rescan on Windows Update for updates, and then install the July 2018 .NET Framework Security and Quality Rollup update KB 4340557 or KB 4340558, as applicable.

Today Microsoft released six updates, but I was only able to get five to successfully install. The sixth update -- KB4340558 -- continually fails with error code 80092004.

The full name of the update is:

Security and Quality Rollup updates for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, and 4.7.1 for Windows 8.1, RT 8.1, and Server 2012 R2 (KB 4340558)

In an attempt to correct this error, I have:

1. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
2. Run"dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth"
3. Stopped and restarted services pertaining to Wnidows Update -- wuauserv, bits, cryptsvc

But none of these steps resolved the problem.  This particular update downloads, but simply fails to install.

I did a clean reinstall a couple of months ago, so I do not think my system is at fault here.

Is anyone else experiencing the same problem with this update?

Lets do this in a bit more detail:

Save this page and other quoted in Favs or other in case you get lost!  This is not difficult.

No need for a re-install (OMG) of Win 8.1, but you have to download the three files in the update KB4340558 but in your version, either x32 or x64   Go to:

  https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4340558

and you should see both 32 and 64 versions.  Click 'download' for your version and you get a dropdown panel of three files - 4338415, 4338419, 4338424.  Each program needs to be clicked in turn to bring up the save/run panel.  Save each on in turn.

To re-find the 'downloaded' panel again go to Internet Explorer 'Tools' to find  it.

First one - the 4338415 - just click it to run it.  It gets the Windows Update Standalone Installer going to run this. 

Next, click the 4338424 and it should run too.  There may be a complaint from the WUSI about this but it seems to get on with the job - pretty slow.   At the end of this you are asked to 'reboot' so do this.  (Restart that is.  Do not do a 'Close' and then 'Start' as this is sometimes quite different to a 'Restart' command.

Now try to run 4338419 in the same manner.  It may not install as I believe it has a bug.
