Today Microsoft released six updates, but I was only able to get five to successfully install. The sixth update -- KB4340558 -- continually fails with error code 80092004. The full name of the update is: Security and Quality Rollup updates for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, and 4.7.1 for Windows 8.1, RT 8.1, and Server 2012 R2 (KB 4340558) In an attempt to correct this error, I have: Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter Run"dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" Stopped and restarted services pertaining to Wnidows Update -- wuauserv, bits, cryptsvc But none of these steps resolved the problem. This particular update downloads, but simply fails to install. I did a clean reinstall a couple of months ago, so I do not think my system is at fault here. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem with this update?

I intend to simply hide the KB4340558 update for the time being. Hopefully next month in August on "Update Tuesday" (second Tuesday of the month), a corrected version of this update will be available that installs successfully. I have done just that, sort of out of sight out of mind.

On Windows 8.1 64 bit, experiencing the problem described, "Windows 8.1 Update KB4340558 Fails with Error Code 80092004". I had a hunch that it was somehow related to last months optional "Preview of Quality Rollups..." for .NET Framework. Note, that once installed, you cannot readily and easily uninstall some of these rollups. So, I had to use System Restore to roll back the machine to a date before I installed the Preview of Quality Rollups, which was June 20, for me. Upon reboot, ran Windows Update, and was able to install all of the security updates, including KB4340558. Hope this helps. Thanks for the help. This worked exactly as explained.
