BSOD on OneNote 2016 after Upgrade to Windows 10 Fall Creators Update 1709

I have this problem (BSOD in win32kbase.sys) on different computers (dell optiplex 760 & 780, optiplex 7020, hp elitedesk 800 g2, home built on MSI mainboard with core i7 3rd generation, (some with NVIDIA NVS, some integrated graphics, different software), a Surface Book (!) from 2016 ) after upgrading to Windows 10 1709 on OneNote 2016 (coming with the Office 2016 package), but only for this combination of OneNote and Windows.

We use CurrentBranch for Business Enterprise and regular Professional version.

Common is to all the cases that a more complex OneNote slide crashes faster (within seconds):

we have tables (6x20) filled with screen-captured images (~1500pixels x 1000pixels) + some text, when zooming (control + mouswheel) in these files, BSOD occurs immediately.

No special additional hardware, update level on 2017-11-15 (just received KB4048951 and others, problem persits).

On request, I could share the OneNote file.

The exactly same OneNote file makes no problems on Win 10 1703/Win7/Win 8.1, or on a Win 10 1709 running OneNote from Office 2010/2013 packages.

    Hi Jeff

Thanks for the update to this issue.

Will there me an announcement about the update ?  Any idea on when this will be ?  We have this issue on about 80 devices so its a fairly big headache for us at the moment.

    Thanks

    Garry

I'm so glad I found this thread. My computer is having the same problem. At first I thought I would need a new computer, but it looks like if it is happening with the software across multiple devices, then it would be a waste of money to get another computer that would do the exact same thing. I started noticing this about a month ago when I started this new semester. I use OneNote every day and this is a major inconvenience when I'm in the middle of a class or studying for tests and the computer just crashes.

I have a Sony Vaio Pro 13. It is about 4.5 years old. Intel I7 processor, 8 gb RAM, 126 SSD. Everything else on my computer works great except when I try to use OneNote. Sometimes I can get through a whole class without it crashing, other times it crashes as soon as I open a notebook. Please let us know how soon we can expect to have this resolved.

-Also as a sidenote, I chatted in with a Microsoft Agent and instead of acknowledging the problem, he said he would send me an email with how to fix it since he "fixed" a similar issue a few weeks prior. He then sent me a generic email that basically told me to restart my computer. Please let your help people know that this is a known issue so other people don't think their computer is broken.

Hello all, I'm an engineer from the OneNote team.  Sorry for the trouble and silence here.  The Windows team has identified the bug in the 1709 update and is preparing a fix for this.  At this time I don't know when the fix will be released, but will be in a future update.

Thanks a lot for this reply! Big relief here.

I'm jumping onto the Insider Fast Ring, seems my other PC on the Fast Ring does not experience this issue, so maybe the Windows team has fixed it on the most recent build (build 17083 though it's not too stable for MS Edge, I'll take it for OneNote functionality)

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the update. Any idea about when the fix will be available?

We have 1000+ devices and just deployed approx. 400 brand new machines last week (not great when a brand new computer is blue screening). This is a huge headache for us at the moment.

Any chance of a hotfix that we can push out?

    Thanks,

    John

It seems that the latest upgrade KB4058258 fixes the annoying problems.

At least there is no BSOD on my computer as before up to now.
