After installation of KB4056892 boot failure, after roll-back error 0x800f0845

Hi,

I have older AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, Asus MB, after installation of KB4056892 the system doesn't boot, it only shows the Windows logo without animation and nothing more. After several failed boots it do roll-back then it shows error 0x800f0845. Unfortunately, it seems it's not easy to disable the automatic updates without gpedit tweaks, so it tries installing and rolling-back the update over and over. The sfc /scannow shows no problem, in-place upgrade also doesn't seem to help. I can try full reinstall, but I doubt it will change anything. It seems like the update is binary incompatible with my old CPU. I understand that making the machine unbootable is the best protection from remote exploitation, but I would rather have the OS working. Especially if my CPU is not vulnerable to the Meltdown attack and the MS mitigation attempts for Spectre is more than questionable. I could find only some German and Italian people reporting the same issue (well the CPU is quite pre-historic and the KB update is very fresh), but no info / acknowledgment from the MS so far. I have Czech localization. Could anybody provide more information?

You would really need to provide more details to get any assistance, such as what sort of hardware is it, and was it a problem before the update.

I'd try and boot in safe mode if you can, you can select that through the advanced troubleshooting options - if you can get that far?

As so many people were having trouble with BIOS controlled audio and video, I have taken snapshots (literally..) of all the old settings on our old AMD PC, and disabled any settings that were not completely necessary to avoid conflicts, you may want to check your BIOS settings and experiment.

It does sound like its not happy with display management software..  though who knows, its a longshot on a Microsoft hosted forum, but somebody from Microsoft may even chime in with an idea... :-)

...BTW - when you get the black screen is it hung? or can you use ctrl alt del to bring up the task mgr?

Thanks for the follow-up. Essentially it's a similar hardware setup to those that have already posted in this thread. AMD CPU, Win10, and pretty standard other hardware. I realize that's somewhat vague, but at this point, it's a known issue that the latest KB update(s) has caused various systems to become non-bootable. Safe mode is a no go at this point as well since it also just hangs upon selecting any of the (3) safe mode variants. I can get to a command prompt (hence how I loaded the other suggested KB patches). I've read elsewhere that disabling virtualization might also help but I don't see that as an option for this board. I've removed the video card and am only using on-board at this point to help simplify matters. In addition, no extra unnecessary peripherals either. No system restore points to revert to either. I'm in the process of creating a drive image to back everything up and will then start playing around with some of the more aggressive fixes that Win10 offers.

On the black screen, I can ctrl-alt-del and get to the menu where is displays task manager, log off, switch user, etc. but selecting task manager just takes me back to the black screen. I can switch users but each user just goes back to the black screen. What's even stranger yet, the only keyboard combination command that functions on the black screen is Win-P. Which shows the (4) monitor display options. Primary is selected and I cycled through the other (3) options with no different results. Is there any chance of trying to roll back from the Creator's Update?

Very detailed procedure, thank you for the suggested fixes. I was able to download, copy to the OS drive, and successfully apply patch KB4073290. However, unfortunately, the issue I'm experiencing just boots to a black screen with mouse pointer. It's curious that I'm able to get to the Win10 login screen and see the various users listed. But as soon as I attempt to log into any of them, the dreaded black screen w/ mouse pointer is the only visual at this point. Going to keep searching for a fix on this. Any other additional suggested fixes would be appreciated. I'll also post back with any results of my own should I be successful in implementing something.

EDIT: I also tried the same patch application method to implement KB4057144 without any success. Still searching for a remedy.
