After installation of KB4056892 boot failure, after roll-back error 0x800f0845

Hi,

I have older AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, Asus MB, after installation of KB4056892 the system doesn't boot, it only shows the Windows logo without animation and nothing more. After several failed boots it do roll-back then it shows error 0x800f0845. Unfortunately, it seems it's not easy to disable the automatic updates without gpedit tweaks, so it tries installing and rolling-back the update over and over. The sfc /scannow shows no problem, in-place upgrade also doesn't seem to help. I can try full reinstall, but I doubt it will change anything. It seems like the update is binary incompatible with my old CPU. I understand that making the machine unbootable is the best protection from remote exploitation, but I would rather have the OS working. Especially if my CPU is not vulnerable to the Meltdown attack and the MS mitigation attempts for Spectre is more than questionable. I could find only some German and Italian people reporting the same issue (well the CPU is quite pre-historic and the KB update is very fresh), but no info / acknowledgment from the MS so far. I have Czech localization. Could anybody provide more information?

    As previously mentioned, you will need a copy of Windows on either a DVD disk or a USB drive.

    You will first have to boot into the BIOS/UEFI Setup menu, typically by pressing a key during computer start. You should see a message to press the applicable key (it's usually 'Del') shortly after you hear the system beep.

    In Setup, look for the 'Boot' tab. Change the boot device options to select either DVD or USB (depending on whichever media your copy of Windows is on) to make it the first boot device. Exit Setup confirming that you want to save the change.

    With the DVD or USB copy of Windows inserted, restart the computer. Watch for the message 'Press any key to boot from DVD' (or similar text). Press a key and the copy of Windows on the DVD or USB will be booted. You have only a few seconds to press a key. If you fail to do so in time, the computer will try to boot the copy of Windows on the hard drive.

    It isn't essential to change the boot setup order back, if you opt to leave it as is there will be a very slight delay (a few seconds) in boot time.

    BeastMstr, I've been lucky in that I've been able to recover my computer twice now. I had a live computer to download to. I saved the download and did a standalone install.

    As to booting into Windows, it may not work for you but I think the key was totally removing power supply. I could only do this because there was no hard drive activity at all. Disconnected wire input and dropped the battery for several seconds, then reconnected and switched on. It has never worked first time and I obviously can't warrant it'll work for others at all but I have twice re-established life of a sort eventually. On the 4th I had to do a reset, this time, as I said, the update did eventually work. If you are getting any sign of HD life as you power up, you could try using F2 or F12 to delay an immediate tumble into an unstable Windows environment.

    For you interest, it is possible to boot Live ISO of Ubuntu fully into memory, and then eject the DVD-rom, and use the booted system to burn Windows ISO. See this answer https://askubuntu.com/questions/829917/can-i-boot-a-live-usb-fully-to-ram-allowing-me-to-remove-the-disk

    For the future, it's good to have a bootable Live ISO just in case, because there's always something can happen.
