After installation of KB4056892 boot failure, after roll-back error 0x800f0845

Hi,

I have older AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, Asus MB, after installation of KB4056892 the system doesn't boot, it only shows the Windows logo without animation and nothing more. After several failed boots it do roll-back then it shows error 0x800f0845. Unfortunately, it seems it's not easy to disable the automatic updates without gpedit tweaks, so it tries installing and rolling-back the update over and over. The sfc /scannow shows no problem, in-place upgrade also doesn't seem to help. I can try full reinstall, but I doubt it will change anything. It seems like the update is binary incompatible with my old CPU. I understand that making the machine unbootable is the best protection from remote exploitation, but I would rather have the OS working. Especially if my CPU is not vulnerable to the Meltdown attack and the MS mitigation attempts for Spectre is more than questionable. I could find only some German and Italian people reporting the same issue (well the CPU is quite pre-historic and the KB update is very fresh), but no info / acknowledgment from the MS so far. I have Czech localization. Could anybody provide more information?

I read what you posted, i run into a problem. I don't have windows 10 on DVD or flash drive, as my copy of windows 10 was the free upgrade. And if i did how do you use the raparation tools? step by step would be great.

Windows 10 ISO is a free download on Microsoft site. I used an Ubuntu Live DVD to move my critical files to a second hard drive. My only visible restore point was after the bad update, so it did no good. Recovery disk was not working nor was my recovery partition. I downloaded the ISO, burned it to DVD on another machine and did an install. This made my old install visible and upon boot, it wanted me to choose which one to boot. At that point I opted to wipe, repartition the drive, and do another totally clean install. I then paused Windows Update and used wushowhide to hide KB4056892. Found out about the new updates and decided to wait a couple days to see how it went for everyone. I'll install this weekend.

It is a bit confusing as to what breaks/fixes what. Posting what happened here after 01/04/2018 can add some information.

AMD fx-8150 / ASUS M5A95 / Win-10 64 Bit.
- KB4056892 is the only related update installed.
- ASUS Ai Suite 2 stops working with errors.

AMD fx-6300/ GIGABYTE GA-78LMT / Win-10 64 Bit.
- KB4056892 is the only related update and installed with no apparent damage.
AMD Athlon X2/ASUS M3A78-V3 Win-10 32 Bit
- KB4056892 causes unbootable state. Will not recover from checkpoint.
- Restored from REDO system image.
- Blocked KB4056892.
- KB4073290 is for 64 Bit OS so does not apply.
- KB4073291 installs correctly.
- KB4056892 still shows as failed in update history.
- Show/Hide tool shows no updates blocked. KB4056892 was blocked and now it's gone.
- Looking with Show/Hide there is no mention of KB4056892.
If we could see what updates were installed on an older AMD CPU with Win-10 64 Bit OS it may indicate if KB4073290 patches or replaces KB4056892.

Hi just want to know how you installed the update? if i can't boot into windows how do i install or apply the update?

I am confused on how to apply a updated if my computer wont boot in to windows

You mean KB4073290?

KB4073290 is for x64/64bit and KB4073291 is for X86/32bit, and boot updates solved the same issue with AMD Athlon 64 and related CPUs with unbootable status caused by KB4056892.

Melerix, thanks for your help through this shambles. I have a 2008 Toshiba Satelite with a Turion 64 X2. I ran into trouble installing KB4073290 so I hope what I've outlined below may help if anyone else has similar trouble.

I downloaded the update as a standalone and installed it. It took forever. When "complete" I restarted as asked and then found I was back to Jan4th and what happened with KB4056892: restart ended with the computer switching itself off before BIOS loaded. And again. And again. So I disconnected power and battery and again restarted. Windows started to load, declared itself broken and went into repair mode, eventually saying it couldn't self repair. Having had to reset on Jan4th, I went for the "continue to Windows 10" option. Shut down by itself again. I thought all was lost at this stage but again removed all power sources and tried restart. Used F12 this time and after going through boot screens this time Windows started to load again, then a blue screen telling me the update was only at 89%! Left it to continue and it went through to 100%, restarted and I now have a computer running build 16299.194, as it should be.

Hope it doesn't happen to anyone else but, if so, nil desperandum.

ok I have downloaded windows 10 on my flash drive. now how do i installed these updates (KB4073290 is for x64/64bit and KB4073291 is for X86/32bit, and boot updates solved the same issue with AMD Athlon 64 and related CPUs with unbootable status caused by KB4056892) to fix my problem if i can't boot into windows?

I am just looking for a step by step.
