Have checked there are no active wake timers Turned off wake via Ethernet and all drivers/BIOS seem up to date. Any suggestion as to why this is happening and is this a known bug requiring a patch? Also via powercfg no application are preventing sleep

I too had a similar issue. I'm posting because this thread is one of the top results Google gives for Windows 10 sleep problems.

The solution that worked for two computers I had that were not sleeping was as follows:

  • Run an admin command prompt
  • powercfg -requests
    • This command lists all processes or services currently running that are preventing the computer from sleeping. The list is helpfully broken down by categories. One of my affected computers had sleep blocked by the IncrediBuild component of Visual Studio, the other by a different TSR program.

This problem has self-healed itself for me. But a question with regards to Paul's findings with the following:

    EXECUTION: [SERVICE] Device\HarddiskVolume6\Windows\System32\SearchIndexer.exe (WSearch)

    Windows Search is indexing

If perchance this is an issue, how would one stop that execution? What scares me with this thread, is the vast amount of replies rolling in. Should we expect a reply anytime within the next two to three years?

I usually have sleep issues after a Microsoft update. My computer will not go to sleep. It keeps on turning back on shortly after I make it sleep. Here are the things I check first when this happens:

    • Ensure the "Turn on fast startup" checkbox is unchecked in Power Options. For some reason, this got enabled once after an update.
    • Check your keyboard and mouse power settings. From Control Panel, click on Mouse, then Hardware>Properties>Change Settings>Power Management. Ensure that the "Allow this device to wake the computer" box is unchecked. Do this for your keyboard also.

When none of this works, here is what else I do:

    • Check the advanced power settings. Sometimes if there is something enabled in there that shouldn't be, it can cause an issue. If you haven't changed any of your settings recently, this may not be the problem. You could also try resetting these settings to default and see if that helps.

After ALL of the above steps, my computer was still not sleeping. It was very annoying. I was determined to fix this issue, so I tried something else.

When all of the above fails, try this:

    • Run command prompt as an administrator and type this:

    powercfg /systemsleepdiagnostics

It will save a file to your hard drive, which you will have to locate to view it. It usually saves in C:\Windows\System32. The filename is system-sleep-diagnostics.html. This html file will tell you what potential software/devices, etc could be causing an issue. Look for any orange colored bars, which means there was a power request. This should locate what is preventing your computer from sleeping.

After viewing the diagnostic file, I discovered that the Apple software updater was preventing my computer from sleeping! I confirmed this after updating iTunes, and my computer then finally went to sleep. I don't think I've ever had this issue before. Anyway, now it is fixed!

    I hope this helps.

    -Erika
