Windows 10 won't go to sleep after recent fall update

Have checked there are no active wake timers Turned off wake via Ethernet and all drivers/BIOS seem up to date. Any suggestion as to why this is happening and is this a known bug requiring a patch? Also via powercfg no application are preventing sleep

I too had a similar issue. I'm posting because this thread is one of the top results Google gives for Windows 10 sleep problems.

The solution that worked for two computers I had that were not sleeping was as follows:

  • Run an admin command prompt
  • powercfg -requests
    • This command lists all processes or services currently running that are preventing the computer from sleeping. The list is helpfully broken down by categories. One of my affected computers had sleep blocked by the IncrediBuild component of Visual Studio, the other by a different TSR program.

    There is a bug with the Twitch Desktop App that will cause this to happen.  If you are running that, try closing it.

    In general, the command powercfg /requests will tell you what's preventing your system from sleeping.

    Many thanks, Zutroy - disabling Cortana completely now allows my PC to sleep soundly until I hit a key.

    How strange that - apparently - Microsoft did not foresee this problem.  When I used the Command Prompt to see what devices were waking the PC, only the keyboard was listed.  I suppose if I had disabled the mike on my cam I would have achieved the same result

    • but no one suggested that, and, as I don't use Cortana, Zutroy's tip is preferable.

    Its probably not your GPU.

    run cmd as admin and use the  command powercfg -lastwake to see what is waking your computer.

    It is likely your ethernet socket, That was the case for me

    If it is go to the device manager and find that device and dont allow wake.

    For me it was something to do with not allowing packets to wake except magic packets.

    If its not that then you can still view what is waking.

    The problem I think most people (and myself) are having on this thread Is the computer flat out wont go to sleep on its own,

    however now it looks like theres lots of different issues than the thread was intended.

    I'm still having the wont sleep on its own problem.
