Fall Creator update fails to install at 81%

All my windows updates crashes while installing. I have windows 10 version 1607 and was trying to update to the fall creators update. Like previous upgrades, this version crashes the computer while updating and reverts back to the previous version.

Unlike previous crashes, this one made it all the way to 81%.

I have tried all prior options to try to correct this issue with no resolution :(

I was having a similar problem, and after multiple attempts (over 7 times) trying different solutions like disabling virus protection, disabling startup programs, running update database corruption repair, etc. My computer never got past 81% before freezing and not updating.

I stumbled across a forum talking about problems with  Anatel  PCI-E Wlan cards (wi-fi) and old drivers that would hang up their computers and after removing the card (not just disabling) their machines would update and run fine. Since I was running my machine through an Ethernet connection, connected to an access point, I could remove the Anatel card in my computer and still have an internet connection. I tried it, and my computer a Gateway FX6860 updated to Windows 10 Fall Creators version without any problems. 

Check to see if you have an Anatel wifi card and remove it and replace it with something newer or an Ethernet or usb connection to the internet and try the update. this worked for me.

    Hi Louie Del.

    I had a look at this article and noticed a few things.

    1. My computer was on fastboot after I initially installed Windows 10. When I disabled this my computer wouldn't shut down properly. Windows quit, but the hard disk was still running.

    I decided to:

    1. Turn back on fast boot.
    2. Remove any USB devices
    3. Turn off my anti-virus

    I re ran the install from the Windows Update website.  Again I had an issue where during the update and after a restart. the screen went black with no information at all on screen about what was happening.

    I ran through the usual proceedure and this time, the update worked. So far so good, lets see if my other issue re shutdown is solved.

    I have to say though, this amount of complication around updates is just not on.  Microsoft needs to make the update process more informative, and allow opt outs for systems experiencing difficulty.

    If you are encountering issues updating your PC and you've already tried the basic troubleshooting methods, we recommend doing a repair upgrade or in-place upgrade. A repair upgrade is the process of installing Windows 10 over the existing installation of Windows 10.

    When a Windows Update fails, some system files may be damaged or corrupted and doing a repair upgrade will fix system file corruption while installing the latest update. To do a repair upgrade, kindly refer to this forum article.

    I have just got Microsoft support to make some Registry changes which apparently fix the problem

    Basically, as simple as setting Updates to "Do not update" or "Tell me about updates and let me choose"

    (or words to that effect)

    It you go to Microsoft Support site, select chat, and 'speak to a live agent' they are apparently doing this for people 24/7

    They assured me it will be fine now ... will have to wait and see

    Yer, I too have tried Microsoft support to no avail. They have concluded that my 5 year old computer is too old for windows 10 and have given up on trying to upgrade it.

    BTW, watch out for those microsoft support agents that fill in their own evaluation once they are connected to your computer.
