I cannot restore any system image which was created in Windows 10 v1709 using Backup and Restore. I receive the following error:

“The system image restore failed.

Error details: A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the Application event log for more information.

(0x80042302)”

This is a fresh Windows 10 v1709 installation. The repair disk was created using Backup and Restore. The image resides on an external USB hard drive which contains other images. I can restore any Windows 10 v1703 image using the repair disk. I cannot restore any Windows 10 v1709 image using the repair disk.

As a first test, I installed Windows 10 v1709 on a new HP EliteBook 840 G4 laptop (before installation I wiped its hard drive). I also used a different external USB hard drive to back up the image successfully. I checked Event Viewer and found no errors or warnings relating to Windows Backup. After a successful backup, I wiped that laptop using the “clean” command and tried to restore the same image I created earlier. It failed with the VSS error referenced above.

As a second test, I installed Windows 10 v1703 on the same HP EliteBook 840 G4 laptop (before installation I wiped its hard drive). I used the same external USB hard drive to back up the image successfully. I checked Event Viewer and found no errors or warnings relating to Windows Backup. After a successful backup, I wiped that laptop using the “clean” command and tried to restore the same image I created earlier. The restore was successful.

Unsuccessfully, I tried to restore an image using repair disks I created in Windows 10 v1703, v1607 and v1511.

I am aware System Image Backup (SIB) Solution is deprecated (not removed) in v1709. I searched online for other users with the same issue and came across the following post on TechNet forum.

The culprit appears to be v1709. Something changed to prevent a successful restore.

    I found a workaround for this process. Used the Windows Disk Management tool to mount the images from the external drive and then copied the data onto a separate folder in the drive. Thanks for all the help!

    Sounds right.

    Disk Management

    Action

    Attach VHD

    Assign a letter  and you have access to a virtual disk for the volume you are trying to recover.

    Detach the VHD once you are done.

    Hey, so did you manage to restore the partations other than C? Like me, i am trying to restore recovery and maybe efi partation from SIB because whenever i try to reset window, it gives me error. So i think to reset window, you also need to recovery partation from old SIB. So did you manage to do that?

    Not sure what you mean with reset windows ? 

    If you did a fresh install of windows before restoring the image of drive C, that creates the EFI and the recovery partition.

    Unless you are trying to reset to the factory setting, in that case you would need the original recovery and or OEM partition that was set up by the manufacturer,  you should have created the recovery media as suggested by the manufacturer when you first received the computer.

    Perhaps you can use Disk Management to attach the VHDX of the other volumes that were created by the backup.

    By reset window i mean resetting the window to factory settings. And yes, i did a fresh install of windows before making SIB and it consists of 3 partations C, recovery & efi. But i am coming to windows laptop after a long time and wasn't aware that i will face the sib restore problem in windows 10, thats why  i didnt care to make a recovery media for my laptop. So only i have restored my c partation using rwb1012 method, is there a way to restore recovery partation as well so i can freshly install a out of box window copy of my laptop?
