I cannot restore any system image which was created in Windows 10 v1709 using Backup and Restore. I receive the following error:
“The system image restore failed.
Error details: A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the Application event log for more information.
(0x80042302)”
This is a fresh Windows 10 v1709 installation. The repair disk was created using Backup and Restore. The image resides on an external USB hard drive which contains other images. I can restore any Windows 10 v1703 image using the repair disk. I cannot restore any Windows 10 v1709 image using the repair disk.
As a first test, I installed Windows 10 v1709 on a new HP EliteBook 840 G4 laptop (before installation I wiped its hard drive). I also used a different external USB hard drive to back up the image successfully. I checked Event Viewer and found no errors or warnings relating to Windows Backup. After a successful backup, I wiped that laptop using the “clean” command and tried to restore the same image I created earlier. It failed with the VSS error referenced above.
As a second test, I installed Windows 10 v1703 on the same HP EliteBook 840 G4 laptop (before installation I wiped its hard drive). I used the same external USB hard drive to back up the image successfully. I checked Event Viewer and found no errors or warnings relating to Windows Backup. After a successful backup, I wiped that laptop using the “clean” command and tried to restore the same image I created earlier. The restore was successful.
Unsuccessfully, I tried to restore an image using repair disks I created in Windows 10 v1703, v1607 and v1511.
I am aware System Image Backup (SIB) Solution is deprecated (not removed) in v1709. I searched online for other users with the same issue and came across the following post on TechNet forum.
The culprit appears to be v1709. Something changed to prevent a successful restore.

Ok thanks, i will do that. But firstly i want to see if i can sort it out by myself and tbh i think with your help i may will. 😀
So i have attached the vdhx file for efi and recovery partation and unhide the system files in recovery partation. What do i suppose to do next?
The biggest one is the C disk.
the ESP is the EFI system partition
The last one is the recovery.
Use Disk Management - Action - Attach VHD to attach the one for the recovery volume.
You will see the size and also you can copy the folders...
I also saw then you can order the recovery media from Toshiba if you want to reset your laptop to factory out of the box condition..

Its a toshiba laptop. And yes , it came with window 10 home and no sorry i am sure what the original partation sizes were. But isn't it the ones that i have in that SIB i have? I rested the laptop to its factory settings and then i made the SIB. So does is not mean that the recovery partation is have in that sib is the factory recovery partation?
Are you sure there was no other partition volume?
How many .VHDX file do you see in the WindowsImageBackup ?
You can use Disk Management to attach the VHDX files and assign a letter, then you can see the size of the volumes, you can assign a letter and see the contents of the virtual disk. The files in the recovery partition may be hidden so you will have to change the setting in file explorer to see the system protected folders and files and copy them to a folder on an accessible disk.
I assume you can then copy those to the recovery partition if you can assign a letter to it. Perhaps you will have to do that from command prompt after booting from the installation disk.
