Ya it went after a long time... leaving it to make the .wim file over night was the best thing for me. So now that I got my image working and computer restored time to make a new backup. :)

I cannot restore any system image which was created in Windows 10 v1709 using Backup and Restore. I receive the following error:
“The system image restore failed.
Error details: A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the Application event log for more information.
(0x80042302)”
This is a fresh Windows 10 v1709 installation. The repair disk was created using Backup and Restore. The image resides on an external USB hard drive which contains other images. I can restore any Windows 10 v1703 image using the repair disk. I cannot restore any Windows 10 v1709 image using the repair disk.
As a first test, I installed Windows 10 v1709 on a new HP EliteBook 840 G4 laptop (before installation I wiped its hard drive). I also used a different external USB hard drive to back up the image successfully. I checked Event Viewer and found no errors or warnings relating to Windows Backup. After a successful backup, I wiped that laptop using the “clean” command and tried to restore the same image I created earlier. It failed with the VSS error referenced above.
As a second test, I installed Windows 10 v1703 on the same HP EliteBook 840 G4 laptop (before installation I wiped its hard drive). I used the same external USB hard drive to back up the image successfully. I checked Event Viewer and found no errors or warnings relating to Windows Backup. After a successful backup, I wiped that laptop using the “clean” command and tried to restore the same image I created earlier. The restore was successful.
Unsuccessfully, I tried to restore an image using repair disks I created in Windows 10 v1703, v1607 and v1511.
I am aware System Image Backup (SIB) Solution is deprecated (not removed) in v1709. I searched online for other users with the same issue and came across the following post on TechNet forum.
The culprit appears to be v1709. Something changed to prevent a successful restore.

I backed up my system 4 days ago before giving it for repairs and now I'm unable to restore the system image. It has a lot of personal data gathered over the years and I'll be heartbroken to lose it. I have reinstalled my copy of Windows assuming it might help but to no avail. Please help!
How did you backup your system image 4 days ago ? With Macrium or WindowsImageBackup ?
If you did it with Macrium and you also created the Macrium recovery media (WinPE) you should be able to restore by booting from the Macrium recovery media.
If the Image backup was done with WindowsImageBackup it depends of what windows build you had at the time you did the backup. If you were at build 16299.214 it should work by using the Widows installation media 16299.125 to restore the Image, if the build was 16299.192 or earlier you could try the procedure suggested by rbw1012.

2018-02-15T12:24:11+00:00 Yesterday I tried to do a System Image restore since I heard it was fixed in the latest Windows Update. I used the Troubleshooting Menu from my current Windows 10 Pro (With the latest patches in February) to reboot and start the SIB process. Again I received the same error message that Drivers couldn't be installed Offline. Rebooted into a Windows 10 Pro 1709 Installation disk and was able to restore without errors.
I couldn't format the drive since the Option was grayed out in the System Image restore menu.

UEFI systems SIS and SIR seems to have no problems. ... .224 build already was good (according to this blog)
I am happy - no need to get third party backup/restore software per seat.
