I cannot restore any system image which was created in Windows 10 v1709 using Backup and Restore. I receive the following error:

“The system image restore failed.

Error details: A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the Application event log for more information.

(0x80042302)”

This is a fresh Windows 10 v1709 installation. The repair disk was created using Backup and Restore. The image resides on an external USB hard drive which contains other images. I can restore any Windows 10 v1703 image using the repair disk. I cannot restore any Windows 10 v1709 image using the repair disk.

As a first test, I installed Windows 10 v1709 on a new HP EliteBook 840 G4 laptop (before installation I wiped its hard drive). I also used a different external USB hard drive to back up the image successfully. I checked Event Viewer and found no errors or warnings relating to Windows Backup. After a successful backup, I wiped that laptop using the “clean” command and tried to restore the same image I created earlier. It failed with the VSS error referenced above.

As a second test, I installed Windows 10 v1703 on the same HP EliteBook 840 G4 laptop (before installation I wiped its hard drive). I used the same external USB hard drive to back up the image successfully. I checked Event Viewer and found no errors or warnings relating to Windows Backup. After a successful backup, I wiped that laptop using the “clean” command and tried to restore the same image I created earlier. The restore was successful.

Unsuccessfully, I tried to restore an image using repair disks I created in Windows 10 v1703, v1607 and v1511.

I am aware System Image Backup (SIB) Solution is deprecated (not removed) in v1709. I searched online for other users with the same issue and came across the following post on TechNet forum.

The culprit appears to be v1709. Something changed to prevent a successful restore.

    Hi Jeremy,

    System file corruption could be a possible cause why you are experiencing an issue with performing a restore. To ensure your external drive is not compromised, we suggest performing a check disk. The check disk utility scans through your entire drive to find and repair damages. Follow these steps to successfully run the check disk utility:

    1. Open the File Explorer.
    2. Right-click the drive that needs to be scanned and then choose Properties.
    3. Click on the Tools tab.
    4. Click the Check button.
    5. Wait for the process to be finished and then check if the same issue persists.

    Note: We highly suggest backing up all of the files saved on the drive before follow the steps. This is to avoid data loss issues.

    I am in EXACTLY the same boat as you. Exchanged my SP4 under warranty for ghost touches. Took a system image to an external drive and I am having the exact same issues trying to restore as stated here.

    Windows 10 (1709)

    Error is

    A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the Application event log for more information.

    (0x80042302)”

    Event Viewer says error 22.

    The only disc I have that works is windows 8 with key, but I had to format C first?. Now using 171110, back to normal

    I have the same issue that started with version 1709 at 2 different client sites.  One is Lenovo ThinkCentre M710t-based, the other is Dell desktop-based.  Images created after the latest round of updates cannot be restored. Images created prior to the update restore fine. If we restore an older image, then update the workstation and then create a fresh image, the problem reoccurs.  Wiping the target disk prior to performing the restore has no effect on the error.

    The 1709 update breaks Windows backup-restore imaging functionality.  This is a business-critical function that should receive the highest possible level of attention from Microsoft.
