I'm using an ACER aspire ES 14 laptop and it's been with me for over a year now with no problems whatsoever. Not until the start of 2018 where out of nowhere, windows 10 wants me to install their updates. Now for how long have I been ignoring those latest updates and seen some of the peoples complaints in recent forums that the newest updates destroys their PC/laptops instead of making it better, I'm kinda scared and also don't have the time to get all of the updates in my laptop. First, it was the windows assistant that was bugging me, where it would just show up and stops me for doing anything else. I tried the following method of going to "Services" and disabling both "Background Intelligence Transfer" and "Windows Update" and restarted my laptop, but of course those didn't work since it will automatically enables themselves again while also installing windows 10 assistant back. So I tried another method I found here that needs me to go to Task Scheduler and do some tweaking here and there, and what do you know, it worked! At least for 3 weeks... Then a few days ago, I found windows 10 assistant installs itself again, so I had to do the same steps I did before and it worked so far, then the next day where I was expecting it to install itself again. Something new happened, instead of windows 10 assistant, I just received a notification in my Action Center that "We're getting your PC up to date" and I know for sure that it's still a windows update and this is the part that's making me nuts and stressed out since I have no idea how to stop this, I'm all out of options even from searching this on the web. So I really need help from this.

One day when I have nothing better to do, maybe I will run an update check and let it do it's thing for a few hours.
Yes unfortunately we all get caught out like you did and we are screwed for a few hours or more. Try telling the client the reason he cannot have his cost report you were running there is a delay because Windows just screwed my computer! You may just be looking for a new job.

I don't want to permanently disable installing updates. I just want MY SYSTEM to allow ME to choose when I install them.
That's all. I just don't want the update installation wiping out my work anymore.
The "Cmdr" is completely right. The updates are part of the operating system. If you don't want the updates, you don't want Windows 10.
Sorry but I AM THE USER. I GET TO DECIDE __WHEN__ I INSTALL AN UPDATE. Not somebody else. That should be MY DECISION and MINE ALONE.
So far I have not had an update go bad. They have installed but the one that came through tonight decided to screw up all the work I had open... I was busy texting with someone after a meeting and my system went to sleep and the damn update that I had deferred (or so I thought) just decided to install while I had work open.
THIS IS COMPLETE B.S., period. The idea that I _must_ pay $99 for "Pro" to be able to get around this neatly is also B.S.
I just want to control __WHEN__ I put in the updates. It is MY MACHINE AFTER ALL.
The only way to stop the updates is to disconnect from the Internet so the system can't receive them (this makes Windows 10 work the same as iPad, iPhone, tablets, Xbox, PlayStation, and other consumer electronic devices). This is why Windows 10 is a continuous service, not a one-time product. If you don't agree to the updates, you actually aren't legally allowed to use the system. You don't own Windows, you license the temporary restricted rights to use it. Those are the license terms of contract, and updates are required. Your only alternative is to use another product instead.
We can help you solve any problem you have at all to get your system working properly, but there's no "off switch" for updates, no matter what you do.

If you paid for Windows 10, then you have the right to use it. Microsoft can't force updates on anyone. Microsoft can only offer offer updates, it is up to the user of software to accept and install if they want it. Microsoft can't force anyone to download updates. Your computer is your property. It doesn't belong to Microsoft. Microsoft only owns the software. Microsoft do not own the hardware. It is upto the onwer of the hardware to decide if they want any updates from Microsoft. Microsoft can't force anyone to install updates.
Hey SLLLLL I couldn't agree more, but unfortunately this is what happens when you have to deal with arrogant and grossly incompetent people!
The work around to get rid of the update scripts seems to work well. I did it about three weeks ago and not had any of the forced updates.
I need to find out if HP do the same as Microsoft, as I saw somewhere they are in co-hoots.
