You moderators act like typical IT geeks. Explain how to set it up in win 7 whether it be browser or otherwise. In Clear Laymans Terms!

We aren't moderators. We're random people using Microsoft Products who actually know how to use Google.

"As stated above, that is pure BS. You set it up via a web browser if you don't want to do it via mobile."

Actually, your response contains the greatest amount of BS: The link that was originally supplied has no info on how to solve that poster's problem, AND you propose no actual solution to the initial trouble.  Congrats- you're the winner.

True. Thank you - I have, after trial and error, and searching through the amazon pages, that is is simply on a 'different' amazon page - which would have been useful for amazon to draw attention to. There are so many faults like this with Alexa, and the app that makes me want to beat every programmer with a very thick book.

    • or just 'amazon.alexa' gets one there. As you said, it IS a web browser, and not a standalone 'app' for a pc.

In January 2018, when this question was originally asked, there was no "Alexa app" for any Windows computer.  At that time, the only "Alexa apps" available were for iOS (iPhones/iPads) or Android devices.

You could configure an Amazon Echo device ("Alexa" is the "wake word" for these devices and thus the devices are often colloquially referred to as "Alexa") using the appropriate app installed on your smart phone or tablet.

If you wanted to configure an Echo device using a Windows computer, you had to go to https://alexa.amazon.com AND your computer had to have wi-fi capability (true of virtually all laptops, but not true for many desktop/tower computers).

In early November 2018, Amazon released an "Alexa app" for Windows 10 (https://www.theverge.com/2018/11/8/18075450/amazon-alexa-windows-10-app-download-features).  If you have a computer with Windows 10, you can download this app from the Microsoft Store (http://tinyurl.com/yxk5hhqs).

In addition, there are now Windows 10 computers that come with an Alexa app built in.  See https://www.amazon.com/b?node=17549366011

If you install the Alexa app on a Windows 10 computer, or have a Windows 10 computer with Alexa built in, you can use your computer itself to access many of the features available on Echo devices without buying one of these devices.  See the FAQs here:  https://www.amazon.com/b?node=17549366011

However, the Alexa app for Windows 10 does NOT have the capability to configure a separate Echo device.  According to this Amazon help article (Using Alexa on your Windows 10 device):

Note: To register and setup new Echo devices, you must visit https://alexa.amazon.com/spa/index.html#settings or use the Alexa app for iOS or Android.

If you want to configure an Amazon Echo device,  Amazon's directions for 2nd generation Echo devices are here:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_left_v4_sib?ie=UTF8&nodeId=202189140  You have two options:

    1. use the Alexa app on your Apple or Android smart phone or tablet
    2. use a browser on your wi-fi capable computer to go to https://alexa.amazon.com.  Note, however, that using alexa.amazon.com may not support all Echo devices:

Step 3 of Amazon's directions (connect your Echo device to your wi-fi network) are more fully explained here:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=202179270

If you're using the web site, click "Settings" then "Setup a new device" and then select the type of Echo device you have.
