Camera error "0xA00F424F <PhotoCaptureFileCreationFailed> (0x80131500)" (Windows 10 / Microsoft Surface)

Hi,

I have a problem with the camera app on a Microsoft Surface (bought it 2-3 months ago). When I open it, everything seems OK, the two cameras (front and back) seem to be working fine (no black screen or anything), but when I try to click on the icon to take a picture, I get this error code: "0xA00F424F <PhotoCaptureFileCreationFailed> (0x80131500)".

I tried everything I found on the internet so far to solve the problem, nothing worked:

  • I looked for updates of course
  • Desactivate / re-activate the camera on the Device manager
  • Went to System > Apps and features > Camera > Advanced Options > Reset (a solution I found elsewhere but didn't work for me)
  • Finally I un-installed the Camera app with Powershell and re-installed it with Windows Store, and I still get the same error message

I use the camera a lot for my work, and it was working without any problem these past days. The only recent change I did is that I removed yesterday the destination folder "Camera Roll" from my local disk to free some space on it (I use Dropbox, so I just chose in the preferences of the Dropbox app to not synchronize the "Camera Roll" folder on my computer - so the pictures stay stored online but are removed from my local disk)... But it was not the first time I did that, and usually it causes no problem: when I take a new picture after removing the "Camera Roll" folder, the Camera app just create a new destination folder named "Camera Roll"...

I hope to find quickly a solution, I really need the camera working! (and sorry for my possible mistakes, I'm not an native English speaker, hope I'm clear though)

I had the same problem. The solution for me became apparent when I read DaveM121's post. The error was I had previously deleted the Camera Roll Folder from the My Pictures folder. Simply right clicking in the My Pictures folder, creating a new folder and naming it Camera Roll and then resetting the camera settings to store pictures into the c:/ My Pictures folder did the trick.

    Hello!

I see there are so many solutions, even I faced the same problem with Camera app and honestly non of this worked for me and at the end, I created a shortcut😞 But don't worry, I found ***a perfect solution which is quite understandable, easy and works!***All you need to do is follow the steps:-

PLEASE READ THE STEPS CAREFULLY TO PREVENT ANY LOSS OR TROUBLE!

    1. Open Windows Explorer. From the left pane, choose Libraries. If the Libraries option is not visible to you or not       listed under Windows Explorer, click View at the top of the screen.
    2. ****Now, from the Navigation pane drop-down menu, select ‘Show libraries’ option. Then, right-click each library           (Documents, Pictures, Music, and Videos) and then tap or click Delete. [NOTE:- before deleting libraries just         temporarily copy your data to some other drive or device or you'll lose your data!REMEMBER:-drive or         device not some library]
    3. Now in the left pane, right-click, and then select Restore default libraries.
    4. This will re-create the Libraries and all the data in the library folders should again be accessible through                     Windows  Explorer.

But before this solution, you should try resetting and updating the app and if even that doesn't work then try this.

    Hope this really helped you,

    Stay happy and healthy,

    Yours Faithfully,

    Hitarth😀

After trying every solution on the web without results, I stumbled on a solution that worked for me.

We know the error results from the camera trying to save pictures to the "Camera Roll" folder and failing for some reason, (Folder permissions, location, camera drivers, etc)

After trying all solutions including resetting the camera app and uninstalling it via PowerShell and reinstalling, I went into file explorer and highlighted my C:\ drive, ran a search for "Camera Roll" and was surprised to find more then eight copies of the folder or the history of the folder in various locations on my hard drive.

I deleted every instance of this folder that I assume were created by the last major Windows 10 update since the camera was working fine up to then. Most folders deleted easily, some didn't. Those in the "App Data" folder would not delete but were called "App history" anyway.

Then I went into "Apps & Features" in settings, clicked on "Advanced options" beneath the Camera app and reset the Camera app. This re-created the Camera Roll folder where the app could now write to it with no interference from identical folders elsewhere on the C;\ drive. I then tested the camera and it's working fine again, finally!

I hope this helps others with this frustrating problem.

I seem to have worked out a 'workaround' for this issue.

This should suffice until someone from Microsoft is able to issue an official fix.

[note- this may only work if you have an SD card or USB device?]

    1. open the Camera app
    2. tap the 'settings' cog found at the top right of the screen
    3. scroll down to 'Related Settings'
    4. choose 'change where photos and videos are saved'
    5. select 'Yes' when asked if you meant to switch applications
    6. select drop down box 'New photos and videos will be saved to'
    7. choose SD card (or alternatively USB if available?)
    8. select 'apply'.

To test it, go back into Camera and take a picture. Then tap the new picture preview down the bottom right of screen. Then choose the ellipsis menu [. . . ] up the top right and choose 'File info' or just press 'Alt+Enter'. Find 'folder path' on pop up menu on left of page. Click the blue link to 'Open Folder'. Here you will find the new destination your photos are being saved.

**note I tried changing back to This PC for picture save location, and it didn't work. I have Dropbox too, and suspect perhaps my Camera Roll folder is corrupted, perhaps Onedrive or Dropbox corrupted it.

Would be good to get an official response from Microsoft staff though instead of the usual silence!

I can't select my USB-device as a location to save photos
