I want to reinstall my windows 10 64 bit into a new SSD I bought.

I am trying to create a USB flash drive using windows media creation tool but I am getting this error every time. I have tried it on 4 laptops and 1 desktop, and with 3 different pendrives.

Hi Divyank,

The error code 0x80072F76-0x20017 means that the tool doesn't have permission for it to run. For us to assist you, we suggest that you follow the simple steps listed below:

  1. Right-click on the Media Creation Tool.exe.

    Hi all!

I had the same problem as everyone else, and it I was able to get it working by changing DNS to 8.8.8.8.

Before that I tried opening MCT at least 20 times, with tips offered here: compatibility mode, disabling virus scan.. Some people here might say it's a coincidence that changing DNS helped, but I highly doubt that, since i tried so many times before..

Also, I see this problem has been around for over a month, and only now MS is starting to investigate it? wow...

Changing the DNS may very well have helped you.  With that said though, changing the DNS to Google's is as much a solution as the others mentioned, meaning it may work for some, but most likely not for most who are having this issue.  At least people are finding some type of solution to kick it into gear, whatever it may be.

I still think it's a server problem, in that their servers aren't "seeing" people's setups the way they should, causing the tool to default.

And, no doubt.  It certainly did take them a while to start investigating this.

thanks for your help, but i was able to get a friend of mine to run rufus and make a bootable thumb drive for me, but i completely agree that it is unbelievable that Microsoft is just now looking into these error codes that so many people are seeing.

Honestly the only thing that works is the VPN thing. Turn on your VPN and it will work. As for Microsoft you are a multi million dollar company and you cant even bother to pay attention and fix this. I am more and more ashamed of even having your products. Microsoft you suck. You used to be good but now you just plain suck this problem has been going on for almost 2 years now. UHHHHHHH so frustrated with you sub par and outsourced to 3 world country MICROSOFT. BIG FU microsoft. Your demise is coming.

If all else fails........revert back 2 rule number 1. REFORMAT the USB drive first. The only thing that worked for me.
