Hello, 

I want to reinstall my windows 10 64 bit into a new SSD I bought.

I am trying to create a USB flash drive using windows media creation tool but I am getting this error every time. I have tried it on 4 laptops and 1 desktop, and with 3 different pendrives.

Hi Divyank,

The error code 0x80072F76-0x20017 means that the tool doesn't have permission for it to run. For us to assist you, we suggest that you follow the simple steps listed below:

  1. Right-click on the Media Creation Tool.exe.
  2. Press Properties.
  3. Click on General.
  4. At the bottom, click on Unblock.
  5. Press Apply, and then OK.

    Hi, interestingly enough, following the comments to http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/media-creation-tool-error-0x80072f76-20017/ I  changed the DNS to 9.9.9.9 and it worked!

    it looks like just a DNS record propagation issue on their end.....  which they have failed to identify and fix in a month!!!!!

    that explains why tons of people around the world have the issue but not everyone

    those guys at Microsoft are probably thinking it's all right just because they sit on their own DNS.......

    There was no "unblock" to click in Properties/General.

    However, right-clicking on the application and selecting "run as administrator" fixed the problem.

    After experiencing this problem yesterday, with all the suggested remedies failing, I tried running the MediaCreationTool today, and it worked with no problem. Go figure. No changes on my end, so maybe this is a problem with the MicroSoft server, as some people suggest.

    Same here.  All of a sudden it just worked.  Nothing changed.  Wouldn't work on desktop or laptop, then just all of a sudden it worked on both.  

    Microsoft really needs to fix this instead of giving people workarounds.  Instead of just fixing the issue(s), with some things it's getting so ridiculous that their workarounds are tantamount to Rube Goldberg machines.   

    "Because clicking Enter doesn't work for you, please go here, download this, run this, copy this, create this, delete this, run this, start in safe mode, move this, add a .exe, run in compatibility mode XX, rename this, throw in some broccoli, and click this.  That should work!"  SMH.  

    I remember when originally upgrading from W8 to W8.1 the system image creation would no longer work because the folder for the Volume Shadow Copy was no longer large enough.  THAT workaround was REALLY fun!  It only took them months to fix that.  

    Linux is looking better every day to a lot of people.
