Hello, 

I want to reinstall my windows 10 64 bit into a new SSD I bought.

I am trying to create a USB flash drive using windows media creation tool but I am getting this error every time. I have tried it on 4 laptops and 1 desktop, and with 3 different pendrives.

Hi Divyank,

The error code 0x80072F76-0x20017 means that the tool doesn't have permission for it to run. For us to assist you, we suggest that you follow the simple steps listed below:

  1. Right-click on the Media Creation Tool.exe.
  2. Press Properties.
  3. Click on General.
  4. At the bottom, click on Unblock.
  5. Press Apply, and then OK.

    There is no "Unblock" option on the properties screen.

    Change DNS to "9.9.9.9".

    I'd recommend waiting a while before jumping on the 9.9.9.9 boat.  It's still fairly new, and who knows what might be revealed about it.  

    We still don't even really know who's behind it.

    Since the issue persists after performing the steps that we have provided, have you tried performing the steps provided by one our MVPs Andre Da Costa on the first page of the same thread dated last October 29, 2017?

    Let us know if you need further help with any Windows issue.

    How about YOU (as in Microsoft) just fix the problem in the first place.  There's something wrong.  People are having issues with it.  As one who has used the Media Creator Tool for a few years now and has downloaded each new version of Windows 10 Pro and Windows 8.1 and written DVDs, I can tell you that the problem is NOT with the customer.  The problem is with YOUR Media Creation Tool.  FIX IT.

    If Paolo suggestions don't work, right click the setup file itself then click Run as administrator.

    You can also download the ISO file directly using your web browser then use Rufus to build a bootable copy:

    Step 1: Download Windows 10 ISO Files Directly Using Your Web Browser

    Step 2: 

    This is ridiculous!  This utility does not work, no matter how many times I run it.  What is Rufus?  Why should I have to create my own bootable copy, you should just supply one that works.  I would just like to be able to upgrade to windows 10, why do you make this so complicated? Time to move to Linux!!!
