Windows 10 KB4033631 and KB4049411 both fail with Error 0x8000ffff

I’ve solved the problem. But only by installing Win 10 ver 1709 manually. It wasn’t all that difficult and was able to keep all my data. Didn’t loose anything. Had to reinstall five apps but again it was no big deal. This is what I did. Hope it helps.

Will number these steps.

1. Bought a 16 gig USB flash drive
2. Formatted it NTSF
3. Went to the Windows 10 download site to download and run the media creation tool https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 on the USB flash drive. The program created the new files on the flash drive.
4. Then I stopped.
5. Did a backup of my data just in case.
6. I have an Asus Zenbook Pro – went to my model support site and downloaded all the drivers and Asus programs for my unit. There were about eleven files that I downloaded to the computer and just to be safe copied them on another flash drive other than the Win 10 1709 that I had created. (it turned out I didn’t need to do it but I felt better) – oh, read each file description carefully, sometimes one file should be loaded before another.
7. I only run five apps other than Microsoft products so it was relatively easy to go to the app support sites, check my installation keys, get them ready for re-install.
8. I don’t normally sign in with my Microsoft account and run a local login/password. Everything I read suggested making sure that I changed that for this process so I went to settings/accounts and clicked “Sign in with a Microsoft account instead”. Very straight forward to create. I was concerned that the ‘digital license’ would be lost somehow. This worked. It was not ‘lost’. It likely wouldn’t have been, but again, it was a precaution.
9. I run Microsoft office so I knew it would not be a problem re-loading and it wasn’t.
10. Took a pause and a deep breathe. Shut down the computer and unplugged my external monitor and a hub that I have a printer and scanner connected and a mouse.
11. Plugged the mouse into one of the usb slots. (didn’t want use Bluetooth or have anything connected other than the mouse)
12. Checked that I had the installation keys written down (or at least had access to them)
13. I’m sure most use an online mail account like outlook.com/gmail/yahoo etc. remember to write down your passwords etc. Oh, and remember the passwords to sites etc. I use firefox so went to settings and took pictures with my phone of the saved passwords. Oh, remember to make a backup of your bookmarks. 😊
14. Now, back to win 10 ver 1709 install.
15. With everything ready, I booted the computer with the win 10 usb flash drive in one of the slots. Didn’t change the bios etc. To run the media tool all one has to do is go into file manager and find the flash drive, and right click “Setup.exe” and ‘Run as administrator’.
16. Very important: A dark blue screen appears with minimal text. However, on the upper left there is a red (in my case) text under Install Windows 10. (I am doing this from memory now so I think it said Install. The important part is the red is actually a choice. The default that came up for me was to install and keep my apps and settings. I tried that a couple times and failed. One has to click on the red text (or at least that short line and two other options show up. (they are not numbered but for clarity) b. Keep my files and delete all settings and apps and c. Wipe all information on the drive . I chose b. keep my files and delete all settings and apps.
17. Then is was click install or next. It was pretty straight forward.
18. Another option that came up was to ‘check for updates’. I selected check for updates at a later time.
19. That was it. Windows 10 ver 1709 installed. I then proceeded to install the drivers and apps from Asus. In about 25 minutes had a working Win 10 ver 1709.
20. It hasn’t been a perfect time reinstalling. Had an issue with the sound driver but that seems to have corrected itself. A couple minor irritants that have successfully gone away but I don’t have the unending update loop. And updates have been chugging along just like they are supposed to do.
21. That’s how I’ve solved this. Good luck. Hope this helps. Tried to be as detailed as possible for you. I’m not a tech.
22. If you try this, be prepared. Make sure you have backup. I didn’t loose any of my data. Just the apps. And when the apps were re-installed they found the existing data. Not bad! Oh, because it is a ‘new install’ it keeps a copy of the older version for 10 days. I went back to it once because I didn’t prepare properly. FYI – I couldn’t access the Asus download page when I installed 1709 the first time. So I went back to the previous version, downloaded the files and then went through the setup again. If you download before you won’t make the mistake I did.
23. Over to you. Good luck. If you do this and it doesn’t work… please don’t come back on me. This is how I solved it and it worked on my computer.
24. Oh, I have no idea how “Unable to wipe deleted contacts” comes up as my name. LOL… only Microsoft and the Matrix know. And I’m not going to try and solve it! 😊

Finally I have run ccleaner and uninstalled the "update wizzard".

This seems to have solved the problem of this window constantly appearing for now.

I will update windows manually later next year (or another) if I get a notification from Microsoft saying that this issues is definitely fixed.

I have the exact same problem as described above.

My computer is heating, lagging uselessly and consuming my enterprise bandwidth for nothing...

It is really counter productive for private companies to have such a system in their computers.

I have tried to untick "windows update" from "services" menu accessed by typing "msconfig" in cortana. But the silly update window keep on appearing :-(

However I think we must go there (services menu) or in the start menu to deactivate something related to this updater.

Be careful though by doing this, don't deactivate anything important for windows to run!

Also, make sure your antivirus is kept updated if you succeed deactivate windows update...
