    Hi PCR,

I do have .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.7 with a black square entry so not all the sub boxes are ticked.  I assume these were required by some software I have installed.

The help article does not reference 0x800f081f  error, there is no entry. I believe I referred to this article in my original post regarding this particular problem.

There is a fix  https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=30135  for .NET Framework problems which I have not tried yet because I don't want to randomly try everything and F the lot up and at the moment I do not know if it is .NET causing the problem.

    RA:  0xf081F CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING

JB:   The fault code I get is not included in the reference list in you link.

You didn't notice that they left off the 800 (saving 3 bytes per entry for CBS return codes)?   ; )

2018-03-15 01:45:45, Info                  CBS    Added C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log to WER report.

2018-03-15 01:45:45, Info                  CBS    Added C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CbsPersist_20180315003519.log to WER report.

I don't think you went back far enough.  See if you can get better clues from the supplementary diagnostics.  If there is a "WER Report" you can find it with msinfo32 under Software Environment.  Each record is actually a binary encoded multi-line report but it is easy to get a readable version of it by replacing all the  (hex) CRLF with real Newlines.  One way is to capture it to Clipboard, then in a TechNet Sandbox forum editor frame use its HTML button, Paste your line(s) in, then click Update, then click HTML again.

However, there are other things you could do with the clues that you have discovered so far.  For example, the two files that were "Moved", where did they go and were they really "moved"?  To check I would use this PowerShell 2 line script:

    cd \

LS -Re -Fi System.XML.dll -Fo -EA:SilentlyContinue | sort LastWriteTime | ft LastWriteTime, Length, FullName

Looks like PCR is right about .NET Framework being a possible factor.  And the other one reminds me to warn you that if you have a third-party security package running it would be best to uninstall it before trying again.

Otherwise, I imagine doing a  DISM RestoreHealth  could be useful.  You can do it in PowerShell with

    Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth

See what kind of report you get from that.  If you look right after it is done it will be at the bottom of your current CBS.log.

    HTH

    Robert

    Hi Robert,

I have checked System Info/ Soft Envior/ WINDOWS ERROR REPORTING and there are a great many entries which will not sort by date and have no Find.  I have copied the logs to Word and done a Find from which I have extracted the appropriate entries for early this morning (15th)  Please see below and yet again they are just GDG to me.

I am very grateful for the assistance you are providing but you seem to be assuming I have a depth of knowledge about the behind the scenes processes.  I have used Windows for 20 years and dug my own way out of trouble on many occasions but every time something goes wrong with a Win 10 Update it seems to need me to dig forever deeper into pit of the Windows system background files and processes, I know the solutions to the problem I have encountered This is way beyond the average users ability to cope since most seem to have trouble with Settings and Control Panel, this I know from the number of people I have to help with the most basic things and who have used Windows for a decade or more.

As an old fart my memory is not quite as good as it was, far from senile yet but medication for my physical disability does have some effect.  I never object to learning more but I do object to having to spend the majority of my spare time trying to get B--- Windows Update problems solved.  The past 4 months have been lost as far as getting the jobs I really needed to do this winter and all due to Update failures.  I have spend hundreds or hours solving or attempting to solve one problem after another.  I have another old & very slow machine running Win 10 Pro with Office 2010 installed and it has updated to KB4088776 with no problem after having stood on the shelf since late January.

I do have Malwarebytes and SuperAnti etc installed and both are now only on demand to cover the major gap I see in Microsoft Defenders function.  I find nothing that works acceptably in the AV available, all have some fault so why do I need to waste money.  I know I read on an Ms Tec response on AV some time ago that he recommended the use of one or both Mwb &/or SASw in conjunction with WinDef.  I will remove both before next try.

Various advice from web searches and Windows Help is,

    Run fix for .NET Framework?

Remove prior Updates and reinstall via Updates but I don't have any Windows OS Updates?

What I missed in the last lot of info I sent is because I don't have the knowledge to know when a shorthand designation is used and when it means what it says.

There are 10 pages of entries:-

I agree, a program you installed brought in .NET Framework 3.5 with it or caused Windows to install it. But that seems to have installed well, if it's in Windows Features. I think the problem is not with that.

Now, I looked at your cbs.log excerpt. (Thanks for making it just an excerpt). It seems - indeed - that "0x800f081f - CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING" error is referring to something about "Package_for_RollupFixAMD6416299.309.1.3". So, I'll stick with the thought to take it from the catalog as a first try to get past the problem. Also, I like Robert's suggestion to turn off 3rd-party anti-virus scanners.

If it fails to install, as Robert said, go immediately to the bottom of CBS.log, & search upward for "TI: --- Initializing Trusted Installer ---". If the segment from there to the bottom is not gigantic, paste it all here. Otherwise, paste out the error messages only.
