Issues Updating from 1703 to 1709

Sorry AO,

           I do not see the link.  New partition by opening space from existing partitions, clean install from DVD.   Maybe I am just thick but nil partition content plus DVD content cannot generate 48GB of old file, unless the installation dug up old deleted files from a prior use of that section of the HDD.  WHY WOULD WINDOWS DO THAT WHEN "KEEP NOTHING" WAS SELECTED for a partition containing nothing.  Yes I have got rid of the lot and I did not bother to see the content, it just was very odd.

I live to learn I guess..  If it is just an oddity, please don't waste your time with a reply.

Thanks for the help you provided, I am disappointed that we did not reach a solution to this problem because the same problem will undoubtedly reoccur to someone in the future, if not me again.

            I have just had a failure of the first and this months major Update to 1709 with the 0x800f081f  error code since a clean install to get 1709 to install.  I STRUGGLED FOR MONTHS WITH THE 1703 T0 1709 UPDATE WITH EVERY METHOD FAILING.    I HAVE A CLEAN INSTALL OF 1709 AND HAVE NOT FINISHED INSTALLING ALL MY SOFTWARE YET  A N D  I  G E T  T H I S!

            I note that there is a problem with Enterprise versions but I do not have that or the  KB4056892 Update.  Most web searches blame .NET framework 3.5 as the cause but is it?                                 

Prior to the 1709 update i had a problem with September is think it was due to a failed prior update unnoticed by UPDATE

Three major Updates in a row and none of them installed as they should, it really is too much.  I don't get anything done spending all my time trying to install failed updates!

0x800f081f  error code

Try looking for that in the CBS.log (or archived versions).  You could use ReportingEvents.log to find a timestamp to use as an index into a particular piece of it.  Then look backwards, sometimes a long way back, to try to infer a cause for that particular code.

If it won't come in through Windows Update, try getting it through the Microsoft Update Catalog link in that URL. Of course, take the one that matches your bits that shows at "START, Settings, System, About". Afterwards, you may delete the download.

If that fails, then I will stand by & watch as you & Robert hunt down the precise culprit in your logs.

But if it's something else trying to install .NET Framework 3.5 (I know you are installing many apps), I guess try to get it using Windows Features or this way...

P.S.S.  I understand Win 10, v.1803, is coming very soon. You might want to hold off on v.1709.

         CBS Log contains a number of references to the error and I have pasted below what appears to be the appropriate block containing all the references to the

0x800f081f error.    The lot is all gobble de gook to me. There are also 3 sub folders containing the same, presumably from multiple tries.

The fault code I get is not included in the reference list in you link.  This PC had a clean install of 1709 in mid February and this is the first true Win 10 Update. I have 51 relating to Office 2010 plus a few drivers and Win Def Updates and 1 Flash Update 

I would like to know if possible:-

              1/.  Why does Windows fail to report that an Update has failed twice, it was only by chance that I checked for a problem.

              2/.  Why a new download every time, it is like have an old Commodore Computer.  Surely the Update file is verified and as a guard against corruption contains some form of Checksum.
