Issues Updating from 1703 to 1709

I would like to share my personal solution to all who reading this. I can't guarantee that it fits to your situation. Crossing fingers.

1. Optional: Full Backup
2. Use the Media Creation Tool and install 1709 setup on USB Flash Drive
3. Run setup.exe while in Windows
4. On "Get important updates" select "Not right now"
5. Proceed as described
6. Ready to install
   • Yes: Install Windows 10 (Pro)
   • Yes: Keep personal files and apps
   • Don't click on "Change what to keep"
7. While update the PC starts min. 3 times + later for some pending updates, two times in my case
8. Start, Run (Win + R): winver shows that I successfully installed 1709

            That method of installation was tried on my machine together with many others and also with alterations to my OS customisation etc and nothing worked.  As said before Microsoft Help Desk failed to achieve the update although they tried 5 times, I lost count of the number of attempts I have made over the last 2 months.

We're glad that you're able to install the updated version of Windows 10. There may be an issue with the connection of your SSD to the motherboard and that is why your computer cannot recognize it. Please let us know if you're able to clone the updated version of Windows 10 to your SSD and if you're able to reload everything on to the latest version of Windows 10.

No problem with the SSD as it was not mounted, sorry you have lost track but I was trying to install 1709 on the HDD with the DVD player in the slot I now use for the HDD.  The addition of the SSD has only been since, NOT DURING and fits in the DVD slot of my LAPTOP

MY LAPTOP NOW HAS 1709 LOADED AS CLEAN INSTALL, NO USB DEVICES AND DRIVERS RELATING AND NO SSD!

I now have the mammoth job of reinstalling everything, some 90 pieces of software  (not counting Microsoft V C++ etc) and setting them up as needed. Then there are all the drivers to check to see if they are the latest for the DELL components.   It will take me a month or more of my free time.  

MEANWHILE I AM STILL USING 1703 WITH ALL UPDATES STOPPED.     Microsoft should have taken on this problem rather than my being left in the ****.   Yes, you have tried to help but after 5 tries by Windows Help Desk I would have thought someone may just be sufficiently awake to recognise that there is something wrong with the approach by Help Desk to the problem. If sfc and dism are inadequate does Microsoft not have anything better to diagnose the problem!

Since you're able to install Windows 10 version 1709 on the new partition of your hard drive, there is a high possibility that your copy of Windows 10 version 1703 on the other partition has an issue. This error can be the reason why you're unable to update to version 1709 through Windows Update or in-place upgrade. This is the reason why we're recommending you to perform a clean install. Although performing a clean install will remove everything, it will also replace the system files of Windows 10 with a fresh copy. By doing this, it is less likely that you will encounter any issues updating in the future.
