Issues Updating from 1703 to 1709

I read your answer but I don't understand the message.

Do you have an proposal for my case?

Inplace Upgrade is no option for me because I customized much.

I can install another HDD and try to install Windows 10 1709 using the "ESD-USB" (6,66 GB) created using "Windows 10 Media Creation Tool".

But how can use the result for my existing installation?

The .iso downloads were to my desktop and because of the long download times due to my low max speed, I was left to run that download from the completed desktop file.

According to Dell I have all the latest drivers for my machine.  Since purchase and installing Win 10 Pro, I have doubled the installed RAM to 8GB and I have also changed the WiFi Card from the original Broadcom to a more recent Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230. I had a lot of trouble with Bluetooth connectivity and this latest card has BT 4 and dual band WiFi.

Based on the reference number that you've provided, the one that assisted you deleted some temporary files and also deleted the SoftwareDistribution folder. The SoftwareDistribution folder contains that data of Windows Update. Deleting this folder will also reset Windows the data of Windows Update. The technician also downloaded the ISO file but did not specify how he/she used the file. Upon seeing the reference number, there is no note that the technician performed the reset of Windows Update components. We recommend resetting the components of Windows Update to see if it will resolve the issue.

Even though a computer is old, if its drivers are not conflicting with the new update, Windows 10 will be able to install the update smoothly. If the issue persists, it is possible that the there is compatibility error between the drivers of your computer and Windows 10. Kindly provide us the full model name of your computer for us to verify if its drivers are compatible with Windows 10. To know the model name of your computer, follow these steps:

1. Right-click the Windows logo, and then click Run.
2. In the Run text box, type msinfo32.
3. On the right pane of the System Information windows, look for System model.

           ***No I did not do that since it logically seems the type of thing beyond my pay grade, if you see what I mean!   The sort of requirement is way beyond any normal requirement for an Upgrade / Update.  I know what I am doing with Partitions, Registery Changes and the like and can sort most problems for myself.  The ways that Updates are implemented in Win 10 is a rare problem (hopefully) as is the need to hack all the existing update files.   After 9 or is it 10 versions and the current removing or shifting of many “control” things in Win 10, I may be finding this shuffling is getting too much for my now tired geriatric brain.

           ***However, I am 99.9% positive that at least 2 of your Answer / Help Desk people did!  A lot done was too fast to follow everything used to prepare the new attempt at installation and which was obviously using whatever software you have (or maybe just very fast fingers).  Perhaps the Help Desk reference will help you see what it was exactly they did do :--  *********   given to me on the 23rd December just after 21:00 GMT.     This preparation is something I am sure you will agree should have taken place with Microsoft's expertise and the need for assistance.

 I checked for system file errors and re-ran the 1703 Upgrade with no hitch but doing the same with the latest 1709 image from DVD or usb resulted in failure.  Dare I suggest that someone ensures a FIX is available to clear all these OLD FILES.  It would seem from what you suggest I do, that any Windows Update leaves a mess behind itself that should have been cleared up when it failed.  At first the repeated failures showed up in UPDATES but as things progressed I found all prior update deleted.   Initially the multiple 1709 Updates were shown as “Restart need” and later everything disappeared.

          .   I have either lost or never had the other 4 references (some prior) as they were never confirmed by Answer Desk using email.   Most never seemed interested in a case number once I told them I had been through this before, they told me how confident they were that they could provide the solution and install 1709 without fail, although none stuck around until the end to find out.  I have saved as many of the Chat dialogues between us that I could but I only have the one reference number provided. 

            I am now stuck with an iffy OS so what happens next, will this happen with every major update, will 1709 update be a  mandatory requirement for the next big UPDATE?   I would maybe stand a chance if I could install the Updates in individual bits but that option was just thrown out in the baby’s bath water as a solution to the reduction of the mammoth updates currently implemented by Microsoft, every one bigger and equivalent to at least the original installation DVD, plus consuming nearly half many a User’s broadband monthly allowance.  Whatever is in the mind of Microsoft regarding the future, all I see is more and more problems with every generation, dinosaurs died out for more than one reason and whatever M’s are playing at may be their end.  Why is Windows so huge, it is less customisable than the first 5 generations and over 10 times the size of  XP and as big as Win 8/8.1.  Win 10 is obese, Win XP ran on an 800MHz single processor and 256MB RAM and was the most popular of OS’s ever, I am sure you do not need telling the minimum requirements for Win 10 today, and I mean full PC not S.

For God’s sake tell your people to stop exceeding the current resources of most people’s PC capacity.   My laptop is a 3 year old, has an i7 processor with 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD and fails 1709 Update.  Another much older dual core Centrino with 4GB absorbed 1709 with little problem other than a black screen and next to nil processor, or HDD, or network activity for nearly 2 hours before it finally awoke and actually finished the installation.  The old laptop is similar in spec to the many of the Surface type tablets having been sold.

There may be an issue with the components of Windows Update and that can be the reason why you're unable to update to version 1709. We would like to verify if you've done resetting the Windows Update components If not, we suggest that you do so to resolve the issue.
