Issues Updating from 1703 to 1709

There may be an issue with the components of Windows Update and that can be the reason why you're unable to update to version 1709. We would like to verify if you've done resetting the Windows Update components If not, we suggest that you do so to resolve the issue. Yes i tried everything, a repair or upgrade install was included and was also one method tried by Microsoft Help Desk.  I  am a 20 year advanced user of Windows and not some halfwit who only uses  it for browsing.

What is the point of a clean reinstall when the problem is likely to be repeated with my setup next time let alone the many hour reinstalling a LOT of software.

If you've already performed all the steps to resolve the Windows Update issue and you're still unable to upgrade to the Fall Creators Update, you can either perform a clean install or an in-place upgrade. Before performing a clean install, we recommend doing an in-place upgrade first. This process will not affect your files and programs. You can use the Media Creation Tool, which you can download here, to upgrade your computer to the latest version of Windows 10. You can also use the tool to download the installation file of Windows 10 and store it in a USB flash drive to create an installation media. After creating an installation media, you can access the media and run the setup file of Windows 10 to start the in-place upgrade process. In case you're still unable to upgrade to Fall Creators Update, you can use the installation media to perform a clean install. We recommend backing up your files first before starting the clean installation process.

Do you happen to Dual Boot?

Use multiple HDD partitions

Use Dropbox, OR,  One Drive as well as

Use any network attached storage and/or  MAPPED on your PC 

Have any usb external HDD regularly

Have a Wacom Tablet.

Use a VPN 

Use a HDD with MBR rather than GPT

I am trying to find reasons why Win 10 1709 will not install since Microsoft are incapable of knowing what they have done with 1709 to cause us problems.  I have wasted too much time already on this problem but I use a lot of software, do you?  

If I thought it would be a permanent cure then I would just reinstall the lot but HOW DO I KNOW IT WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN NEXT TIME if I or Microsoft do not know the cause??????????????????????????

My daughters 8 year old dual core Centrino 1.8 with 4 GB RAM sailed through 1607, 1703 to 1709 after having been ignored for 6 or more months  before dumping it upon me.  It holds 2 partitions on a 500GB HDD

My PC was dual boot but I removed it just in case it was a problem with the failures with this Update.  I have 6 partitions including the small "reserved" on a 1TB HDD but 1 of those is a leftover from earlier deletions and the other hidden.

I BELIEVE IT ILLOGICAL TO TRUST MICROSOFT WITH MY DATA FILES WHICH WOULD BE MUDDLED UP WITHIN THE WINDOWS PARTITION, THEY CANNOT EVEN KEEP OUR ADDRESS BOOK SAFE!  Not familiar with the problem then look it up on the Microsoft Community website.

Yes a lot of work every time.  I assume that the 1709 Update will be a necessary part of the next major update and inorder to keep a fully functioning Windows 10 I will have to make the Upgrade at some point.

Running the PRO version of Windows 10 I had been able to pick when the download happens and then pick the start of the install.  For an individual, with limited periods when I can afford my machine to be non-functional and for an unknown time, I find the NEW REDUCED CHOICE is a pain.

        We are currently expected to download an UPDATE of an unknown size, unknown download speed and an unknown installation time and it is hard luck if it causes us a problem!   I have no idea of the way Ms (Microsoft) implement Updates but I do know that some Updates cause **problems with some functions on my PC and I then have no choice but to reboot, with an unknown delay before I regain a working PC.  This is poor thinking on the part of Ms, how can anyone plan their work when they do not know how long the interruption with a working PC will be unless Ms have no interest in world energy consumption and expect our PCs to be powered on 24/7 regardless of the normal working hours.  Then we have the other times when Ms fire Updates at us!  Major Updates / Patches appear every 2nd Tuesday in the month but there are other times too.  DO WE ALL NEED TO TURN OUR PCs ON THAT DAY AND KNOW WE MAY GET LESS THAN 50% OF OUR WORK DONE.   I am sure the big businesses have more idea about what is going on than us tiddlers.

I know I need to learn more about the other ways to implement Updates, but that is the problem with Win 10, we have to learn how to ****force the lumbering megalith to do what we want for things that were available to us in the past.  I want to be able to download Updates FAST and for that I need to know how big and how long for them to install.   Never mind the snail background download for those average Users on FIBRE for whom the snail is faster than my max download speed and only use Windows for browsing or the internet for Video/TV downloads .  My day is planned and if Ms Updates obstruct that plan then it costs me money!   Why can we not have the Update download properly SANDBOXED and available for implementation when suitable to us with a shutdown down when finished???

I, and many others, want the Updates downloaded and installed before I start work regardless of Pro or Home version!.  Set my PC to start UPDATES late on the 2^nd^ Tuesday, for example, and download and install any Updates and shutdown and then immediately be shot of the B things, (assuming a problem is not encountered during the install as seems to be a more frequent problem.

** Most of my problems with Updates are loss of functions for both Graphics Pad and Laptop Touch Pad but sometimes other symptoms like loss of Copy & Paste and many others seen in the past with Win 10.  You never know what will not work until it does not!
