We couldn't finish installing updates (KB4074588), error 0x80070bc2

Hi.

I'm unable to install the latest windows update 2018-02 Cumulative update for Windows 10 version  1709 for x64-based Systems.

The error is 0x80070bc2

It says updates are available, awaiting restart. When I restart it fails. "We couldn't finish updates.." Then says updates are available, awaiting restart. I restart again and it fails again. Over and over.

I tried using windows update troubleshooter, the tool performed its fixes but it had no effect.

Is there a solution to this?

Thanks

(Update - 2/17 Editing for clarity based on feedback)

If you are currently experiencing the 0x80070bc2 error while attempting to install KB4074588, please try this:

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type cmd.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as administrator.  (Select Yes, when prompted by the User Account Control.)
  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter:

SC config trustedinstaller start=auto 4. Restart the PC.

In some cases, a second restart may be required. If you look under Settings > Update & security and you see the message Status: Awaiting restart, restart the PC a second time to complete the installation.

I have had the same problem.  I ran the: SC config trustedinstaller start=auto and it started installing the update on the reboot but when I  looked at the windows update settings, it still said that it needed to reboot to complete installation.  The build number is the most current though, 16299.248, so I rebooted.  And it said setting up features stage 1 of 61.  It sat like that for about 30 minutes before completing and going to the log in screen.  I looked at the windows update settings and same thing so I put the command in again and rebooted.  Same process again except it was stage 1 of 60...rinse and repeat....and repeat.  I am now down to stage 1 of 56.  I have no idea what is going on but, assuming this will fix the machine, I have continued but it will take hours of repeating at this pace.

I believe the new build after installing this update is:

    16299.248

I'd like to know this too.   The Fix worked for me as well but should I now change this option back to manual so the system won't reboot in the middle of things?

I've tried this 'fix', along with probably a hundred or more from various suggestions on these forums.  Nothing seems to work!

My computer will not install any updates at all, even after two clean reformat and re-installations as well as every other suggestion offered here.

What version of windows should I have after this update?  My computer shows it's on Version 1709 OS build 16299.125.  It never changes.

During the re-installs, it installs six updates listed below, and then will install nothing more even though it tells me that updates are available and prompts me to install them.

MS has to do something about this!
