Update Windows 10 using an external hard drive?

So I was told that I can use the storage on an external hard drive to update Windows 10, which would make sense. I even saw on other Windows Community Forums that it is possible, however there aren't any tutorials or anything online that I could find. I've tried but the update page tells me I need more space, I really hope I didn't waste money on an external hard drive, it would have taken 3 weeks for an internal. So if it is possible to use the space on the hard drive to update Windows please guide me through.

Thank you.

Hi Adam,

There will be an option to use an external drive to temporarily extend the storage space of your computer while the update is being installed if your device doesn't have enough space for the update. We recommend that you check this article as a guide on how to use an external storage device to install updates for your Windows 10.

Let us know whenever you need further assistance.

I certainly agree with Phil Rizzuto, and others in this article who still cannot install the update, or even have the option to disable the stupid

    update.

It must be job preservation by the dicks at MS. Who would ever put out an update package without a CLEAR option to select external storage

in these days of mini notebooks, and then refuse to provide any solution?? It is just unbelievable (except when dealing with MS).

EVERY time I have to do anything with MS Windows, I go into a depressive state as I know it will be traumatic.

For Gods sake MS, just update the download to provide an external storage option on the first page!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The option to use external drive came up once and the USB drivers weren't working so the PC woudn't recognise the drive. Now I've reinstalled drivers, the external drive is recognised but I've restarted the update three times since and the option to use external storage will not show. This is a pathetic little Asus tablet with keyboard and has barely enough on-board to install a few apps. I need to force the external option please.

    Ive given up.

Like every other Microsoft product Ive ever bought, Microsoft failed, gave up, excepted that they are to incompetent to do whatever it was they were trying to do and abandoned the product and customers they had.

MS is by far and away the forefront at cheating customers. Worse then Comcast even.

If you are having the update issue that literally thousands of others are having please let me clarify MS stance on the situation.

MS DOESNT CARE ABOUT THIS ISSUE. THEY ARE NOT WORKING ON IT AND WILL NOT EVER START WORKING ON IT. AS FAR AS MS IS CONCERNED YOU CAN BUY A NEW COMPUTER. THEY HAVE THE OPTION OF SPENDING MONEY TO TRY AND FIX AN ISSUE THEY WILL NOT MAKE MONEY BACK FROM OR SINCE THERE IS ZERO REPROCUSSIONS OF RENEDERING COMPUTERS USELESS(which I think is intentional) AND FORCING YOU TO BUY A NEW COMPUTER WHICH ULTIMATELY THEY MAKE MORE MONEY FROM...

You can read the thousands of posts on this forum alone concerning this issue and see that it concludes the same way every time.

MS says "do this" which is exactly what everybody is saying they cannot do. MS then falls completely silent.

After this many months it is clear this issue was swept under the rug by MS and will not be dealt with.

As this is not the first time MS has completely abandoned me, I am making a firm stance to not buy or support MS products any more.

The only way to make MS listen is to hit them in the wallet.

I have the same issue as everyone else on this thread, and Microsoft’s approach to this issue has been nothing short of disgraceful. All i’ve seen is generic replies by MS, designed to deflect people from the actual problem. You know exactly what the problem is, everyone has explained it very clearly, and provided you with the screenshots youve asked for.

If you dont know the solution, then say so, and ask someone else to take your place who has more idea what theyre doing.
