Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB4054517 fails to install error 0x80070643

I am so fed up that I am investigating if I could just disable Windows Update. It causes too much slowdown and issues. But it cannot be stopped on Windows 10, except with the Pro version + registry tweaks again. The machine has the Home version. This is my sister's laptop so I don't want to have her update to Pro just to disable updates.

See my post in this thread on December 28th where I explain how to turn off Windows Update for just this one "KB" bugfix that is causing the problem. I had to do this as I too am running Windows 10 Home (not Pro).

The latest bugfix from Microsoft may fix it though - see the posts from a day or so ago.

You can go to Services to stop Windows Update then download the stand alone package. I did the same and it was successfully installed. I got tons of problems with Windows 10 x64 not just Windows Update.

The issue you're experiencing with updating your Windows might be due to corrupted components or files.

That being said, have you tried restoring your PC from a recent restore point or performing a System Restore? This will take your PC back to the time you haven't installed the update yet.

If you haven't tried it yet, you may consider it by following the steps under the Restore from a system restore point selection found here.

After doing a system restore, you may try installing the update again.

To me, you get slightly different error messages depending on the Windows 10 version you have been using.

You will see that KB4054022 is the offending update.

Before KB4054517 was issued, I found my AllInOne printer would not communicate with my PC despite it being connected and correct drivers.

I then tried several different restore points without success after it was a suggested solution to fix my AIO.

Restore points returned a message stating that it was unable to go to the selected restore point as there was an error (there sure is).

I eventually uninstalled my AIO and deleted/uninstalled all AIO drivers then re-booted then re-installed drivers & AIO to get it working again.

However when KB 405417 arrived ...... ugh

On the above mentioned Microsoft web site, you will see that if you used Restore Points after KB 405422 was installed it causes this mess.

There is NO Microsoft statement that the resolution has been released.

The message is clearly still

"Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release."

My Laptop and my Dad's PC installed KB405417 without a problem. Neither of these had used Restore Points after KB 4054022 was installed.

On my PC KB4054022 is the only update that does not have an option to uninstall. Every other update in the list has an option to uninstall it. My laptop has the same. This is maybe why Restore Points don't work properly as it will not uninstall.

I cannot at this time install any update. manually or through Windows Update.

As an aside, Windows Defender updates appear, download and install in Windows Update every time I first switch on.

KB4054517 and the other 2 that came with it on 12 December, appear with no install date in the list and message is that they are waiting for a restart to complete install, regardless of how many times I restart it.

With Windows Pro I can pause Windows Update which means that the PC does not try and install them again and again every time I restart.

NB my Windows version is Pro and 1709 16299.64

OH MY GOD MY SOUL BROTHER! I've searched through countless of forums and not one has the exact problem I have (and apparently you have it).

I have a HP laptop running Windows Pro Education and I realized at Christmas Eve that one of my updates (KB405417) failed to download with an error message (can't remember the error message because it doesn't show up anymore) also 2 other updates waited restarting. Well... I thought I would just wait for the next cumulative update and let KB405417 whine in it's special corner. 

Now for some reason KB405417 has complete **** up Windows update. It blocks the check for updates button by insisting that it needs a restart. So that means I can't get any updates before KB405417 is done being a drama queen. Well this could be a slight problem GIVEN THAT INTEL HAS THAT NOT SO GOOD SOUNDING MELTDOWN BUG AND I CAN'T GET THE BUGFIX.

Also, for others it shows that it has downloaded but not for me: my Windows version is 1709 16299.64.
