Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB4054517 fails to install error 0x80070643

We just got our "second Tuesday" updates (12/12/2017) on our W10 machine running V1709.

The cumulative update KB4054517 failed with an error code of 0x80070643.

The only thing we've discovered so far is that this machine will not display our other 3 PC's on the network when we select "Network" in File Explorer.  But all three other PC's can "see" and access this PC no problem.  And we ran a batch backup job on the affected PC and it was able to copy files from all three other PC's.  So it's just a display problem in File Explorer -> Network.

We've run Windows Update Troubleshooter and told it to Apply Fixes whenever it prompted us, and it DID report that it found and fixed three issues:

Potential Windows Update Database Error - Fixed

Windows Update Component Must Be Repaired - Fixed

Check for pending updates - Fixed

After exiting the Troubleshooter, we clicked on "Check for Updates" again and it said "Your device is up to date".

We noticed that the build number after the "failed" update had changed to 16299.125.  So the system thinks it DID install something newer than it had before, but Windows Update thinks the cumulative patch failed to install.

BTW, the other "Second Tuesday" patches (Adobe Flash KB4053577 and Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool KB890830) both installed OK.

had to do a repair I installation. )

I recognized that all MICROSOFT software was simply gone on the C-partition.

Sounds like you missed a step of an ISO Upgrade Repair and accidentally did a full install with it.

Just to put you in the picture what Microsoft regard a repair installation retaining software and settings.

I myself managed to get out of the infernal reboot dilemma by clearing out all temp files, doing a complete disk cleanup including system files (3 GB accumulated!) plus deleting files from Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download. Then all I had to do was double-click the downloaded.... msu file and installation went like a charm. What I did was probably crude, but it worked.

Another chap, same problem as of all us here, used the repair method and found that of all things, Microsoft managed to corrupt Microsoft Office installation. So much for retaining software!

    Hi John Longney.

Thanks for your reply. I must have teken the wrong turn/step tring to solve the issue.  Meanwhile I, independently from your answer, have indeed done quite same procedure, but endend up with temporarely lost mail definitions etc. and corrupted Office 2013.

I wiped lots of Officeparts by uninstalling, but at the same time Updates were re-loaded and doing the reboot after deleting and uninstalling, I ended up 'in the gutter' agian, so to speak.

Now, I am in the reboot-phase again, etc.

So happy, I have an old laptop (Windows 8.1) so I can access this community.

!! Microsoft now has announced there ARE INDEED ISSUES. An other friendly group member pointed me the link and a wordkaround:

    see  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4054517/windows-10-update-kb4054517

I am going to folow that lead....pfff...   Nice software we bought ....

    Thanks agian.

    best regards, John (slagtand)

    Hi David.

Welcome to join the club of users with this problem.

I right now am looking at this site of MS, as it looks like they finally have a workaround.

Hope you can find the solution here:

UPDATEMy system is up-and-running after following the instructions (above) ☺ ☺ Took just 10 minutes or so.

I sent following reply to Microsoft:

I managed to install the updates to my system (Win10 Home x64, version 1709; build 16299.98. @ i7 + 16GB ram) Have been struggling for 2 weeks now, resulting in a leak of storage area, drive C.   After going through the instructions, I gained  49 GB back! Laptop is not in an reboot-Installing loop ☺ !

PLEASE DO update all other languages of support. I am form the Netherlands. THAT site does not point to this solution.

Hi - thanks for the quick response. I did see that post, but everyone seems to be getting a different error to me. I'm getting 0x80070570, whereas most are getting 0x80070643???

However I've just checked for that error code and there's a recommendation to scan my drive for errors so I'll do that and report back.

    :)

    Hi Dave

Since I am struggling for 2 weeks now, I do not care about the different announcements  and failure codes.

Surching thw blogs I am very sure it depend on the failing update and version number.

Once solving the update -having it smoothly working- you might see no errors of this kind.

Following the steps of MS for the workaround, I found lots of data, being the log file.

Important to reduce/remove that.  I stumpled over 24GB of useless data due to the over and over failing updates, my hard drive (SSD) had a leak of space.

    Lots of success.

    John

    UPDATE:  IT WORKS FINE NOW!!
