Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB4054517 fails to install error 0x80070643

We just got our "second Tuesday" updates (12/12/2017) on our W10 machine running V1709.

The cumulative update KB4054517 failed with an error code of 0x80070643.

The only thing we've discovered so far is that this machine will not display our other 3 PC's on the network when we select "Network" in File Explorer.  But all three other PC's can "see" and access this PC no problem.  And we ran a batch backup job on the affected PC and it was able to copy files from all three other PC's.  So it's just a display problem in File Explorer -> Network.

We've run Windows Update Troubleshooter and told it to Apply Fixes whenever it prompted us, and it DID report that it found and fixed three issues:

Potential Windows Update Database Error - Fixed

Windows Update Component Must Be Repaired - Fixed

Check for pending updates - Fixed

After exiting the Troubleshooter, we clicked on "Check for Updates" again and it said "Your device is up to date".

We noticed that the build number after the "failed" update had changed to 16299.125.  So the system thinks it DID install something newer than it had before, but Windows Update thinks the cumulative patch failed to install.

BTW, the other "Second Tuesday" patches (Adobe Flash KB4053577 and Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool KB890830) both installed OK.

    Hi,

The issue you're experiencing with updating your Windows might be due to corrupted components or files.

That being said, have you tried restoring your PC from a recent restore point or performing a System Restore? This will take your PC back to the time you haven't installed the update yet.

If you haven't tried it yet, you may consider it by following the steps under the Restore from a system restore point selection found here.

After doing a system restore, you may try installing the update again.

Let us know how it worked for you.

    Regards.

Please pass this on to your management team.

As can be seen by all these posts, I believe MICROSOFT needs to stop blaming users for the errors contained in their Windows updates.

We users really do not want to see any more updates from Microsoft until they are guaranteed to be 100% error free.  If that means that the update frequency is reduced to once every quarter, so be it. Microsoft should not push out any update unless it has been completely and thoroughly tested to make sure it will not step on something that had been working perfectly prior to that update.

As I posted earlier here, I have been dealing with Win 10  for 2.5 years.  Every problem I have ever had with Win 10 can be traced back to errors in an update.   I would be happy to share my problem tracking log if you like but, suffice it to say, my older devices (HP DV7 & Asus X550L) were really clobbered.  However, with this latest update, KB4054517, the older devices successfully installed it while my 6 month old MS Surface failed to install it.  Now, that is just flat out ridiculous.

While this worked for some, KB4054517 was finally installed on the Surface by simply uninstalling and reinstalling it.   So, I do not believe that "corrupted files" is a very credible statement.  Additionally, KB4054517 seems to have caused a WiFi connectivity issue on my older devices that has rendered almost useless the USB wireless network adapters.  I had purchased those 11 months ago to address the older driver issue on the original wifi adapters contained in these 2 laptops..

Finally, conspicuously absent here are any support recommendations from Microsoft.  Do you people ever look at any of the user forum postings or are we just blowing in the wind?

YOU can IMPROVE your updates!!!  I have been trying for over a week now to install this update KB4054517 and it just sits there wanting to restart. I have used the so-called windows trouble shooter to no avail!  I have tried the stand alone update. I am NOT doing a clean install and doing a restore point does NOT work, there's nothing wrong with my PC. it's your updates!

My PC is brand new, bought a few months ago and I hardly have anything installed on this PC. I had issues a short while back with one of your so-called "updates" and it did the same thing until people were complaining that it was NOT working! Then you threw out another fix and it worked. It is NOT my PC, it is you. Do something, this is not good!! FIX THIS, All the other updates get installed without any problems, it's THIS update that won't install!!

    FIX IT

I can't agree more. I've already spent over 60 hours trying to sort this mess out.

    this worked for my system:

Finally got it installed. This is what did it... <br><br> <br><br>According to this  https://www.computerworld.com/article/3199077/microsoft-windows/windows-10-a-guide-to-the-updates.html <br><br> <br><br>The update progression from OS Build 16299.68 is via 16299.98 to 16299.125 <br><br> <br><br>So I manually updated using KB4051963 to OS Build 16299.98 and then manually installed KB4054517. <br><br>The router was turned off to stop the automatic updater which was trying to butt in. <br><br>Took a while but there were no further problems. <br><br>Don't know why KB4051963 was missing. <br><br>I would expect Cumulative updates to be designed to contain all previous update files. If that is the case then KB4054517 must be incomplete and is more like a "Delta" update. <br><br>This worked for me as well. Thanks! Damn thing wasted hours of my time.
    Post a reply <br> ---

Unfortunately this did not work for me.

    1. Downloaded both KB4051963 & KB4054517 from the Microsoft Catalogue.
    2. Paused Windows Update to stop it reinstalling KB4054517, KB4058043 & KB4052577, the three updates that were awaiting restart.
    3. Uninstalled  these updates using START, Settings Cog, Update & Security, View Installed update history, UNINSTALL UPDATES. then uninstalled them (easily found as they had no install date)
    4. Rebooted
    5. Installed KB4051063 manually.

Lo & Behold it would not complete install without a restart despite many restarts and shutdown then starts, still not complete install.

So still searching for a resolution to this.

I was struggling the updates on my W10 v1607 (x64 Dutch) latop on my SSD 128Gb update since launching, for weeks now.

System is not able to do it herself and I uninstalled last 2 weeks updates yesterday.

Than I turned off McAfee AV and got the last updates manually from MS update site.

Before that I had to -Windows suggested to do so- redo some other software installations to repair them. (I had to do a repair I installation. )

I recognized that all MICROSOFT software was simply gone on the C-partition.

FALL installation manually succeeded. Took me 26 Gb !! of hard disk space. Finally  I had to uninstall parts of Office 2013 to create space for the next, update fixes for the Fall Update. received by automatic update.

I let it install automatically. Systems rebooted. Screen Warning not to interrupt! I waited for 3 hours.  Noting happened. Finally I forced lock down for the system.

System does not recover to the login screen anymore. I have 14 passes of cold boot done.

System does not restart to login.

THIS DRIVES ME CRAZY!!. I am online via my cell phone now. Indeed a fine running system now stopped.... and this is because of tremendous disk space consuming Fall update and its update, finally.

Are these updates hussling in the registry and wrapping it, why so enormous disk space consumption?

    MICROSOFT: how to proceed now??

I do NOT INTENT to create a clean installation.

Two more hours gone. I get a login screen right now. Strangely enough I have to login TWICE to get access....

Windows Update screen tells me KB406417 is pending on download at 99%..... So I am as far as 7 days ago....  I am really afraid to reboot, system might not boot agian.

THIS UPDATE FAILED 14 TIMES BEFORE.

Since I use W10Home is cannot stop system looking door updates. Not blockable.
