Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB4054517 fails to install error 0x80070643

I've been getting an issue as well.

The following is from the error detailed in event viewer:

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0845: 2017-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4054517).

I'm running Windows 10 Pro (64 bit) v. 1709 build 16299.98.

I've been having random freeze up glitches since I installed FCU and I cannot pinpoint what's causing the error due to insufficient data.

I decided to install the update in question and I was presented with the error mentioned in this article post.

I didn't recognize anything in event viewer during the first occurrence. Just today, I forgot the update installed itself and when I happened to reboot, it started applying the update. Yet again, I receive a boot loop, an auto repair screen, and a status of "We could not complete the installation. Undoing changes" upon the final stable boot.

The difference this time was that when I checked even viewer, I found this nasty little bugger:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x000000ef (0xffff84846a680080, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 72f3b9d8-66fd-42c9-8f57-4bad9f38c83f.

Something caused the kernel to flop from what I can tell. I can only assume at this point that there's a driver conflict for the FCU glitch. As for this now cumulative update error, I have no clue. Seeing as how I'm not the only one, I can only infer that Microsoft didn't provision the update correctly.

Thanks for this info.

I had two problems with KB4054517.  I have an old Dell desktop computer and a newer Dell plus a laptop. The cumulative update worked on the newer Dell desktop and the laptop but hosed the older Dell.

First it gave me a blue screen "Inaccessible boot device".  Tried to go into safe mode, did not work. Tried troubleshooting repair, did not work. Tried system restore. All my restore points failed trying to restore. I had to reset my PC which installed the OS but lost my apps. 

After that was able to boot up and get into windows 10 but noticed that it took a very long time to boot up and to shut down or restart. Kept getting that not to shut down since windows is updating or something like that. Tried to repair the windows update. It suggested and flagged a restart. But KB4054517 was stuck at install at 99%. It would fail and said it would Retry. But it was an endless loop of restart shutdown and boot up which each took a long time with windows saying not to turn the computer off.

I then followed some suggestion in this thread.

I had to disable windows update service, which was in Manual (trigger start) mode, and then do a restart. I checked windows update itself and it said up to date. I looked at the windows update service and then enabled it and set it on Manual.  Then I went to microsofts site and downloaded appropriate KB4054517. https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4054517

I then manually installed it. It worked.  Prompted a restart.  I went back to windows update and the cumulative update was installed, windows update said it was installed and I was up to date on updates.

Went back into windows update services and made sure it was enabled and I left it on Manual (trigger start).   

Knock on wood this seemed to have stabilized things.  Now to reinstall my apps. 

Not quite sure what the reason was for all the problems but microsoft hopefully is investigating and does something as this costed me two days and all the programs that I had purchased for the old Dell computer. 

I hope that this helps others if in similar situation.

Oh by the way I did a sfc /scannow. Did not find any issues. And also a chkdsk c: /f /r.

More possible interference.

KB4054517 keeps trying to install then undoes the installation after 7 minutes or so of grinding.

Nothing has fixed the problem.

I have a different build # than has been mentioned. And a different error.

I'm hoping someone knows what I can try.

I had error 0x8024200d with KB4054517.

 

0x8024200D WU_E_UH_NEEDANOTHERDOWNLOAD The update handler did not install the update because it needs to be downloaded again.

Go figure!? Windows Update History states that the install failed on 12/12/17! 

A possible explanation of your symptoms is that an interferer allowed the update to download and install but not apply.  E.g. the apply phase would occur during a subsequent reboot.

To check on that possibility see if you get any additional clues from  sfc  /scannow

Someone mentioned Norton, an interferer, then it might be necessary to uninstall that (and any other similar products) in order to avoid the possibility that any of the three phases of the update process not be affected negatively.  Realize that with a cumulative update you are essentially modifying the whole OS so it is not difficult to see that permitting something to interfere with that process is likely to at least cause a significant performance hit, if nothing else that would be worse.
