Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB4054517 fails to install error 0x80070643

We just got our "second Tuesday" updates (12/12/2017) on our W10 machine running V1709.

The cumulative update KB4054517 failed with an error code of 0x80070643.

The only thing we've discovered so far is that this machine will not display our other 3 PC's on the network when we select "Network" in File Explorer. But all three other PC's can "see" and access this PC no problem. And we ran a batch backup job on the affected PC and it was able to copy files from all three other PC's. So it's just a display problem in File Explorer -> Network.

We've run Windows Update Troubleshooter and told it to Apply Fixes whenever it prompted us, and it DID report that it found and fixed three issues:

Potential Windows Update Database Error - Fixed

Windows Update Component Must Be Repaired - Fixed

Check for pending updates - Fixed

After exiting the Troubleshooter, we clicked on "Check for Updates" again and it said "Your device is up to date".

We noticed that the build number after the "failed" update had changed to 16299.125. So the system thinks it DID install something newer than it had before, but Windows Update thinks the cumulative patch failed to install.

BTW, the other "Second Tuesday" patches (Adobe Flash KB4053577 and Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool KB890830) both installed OK.

YOU can IMPROVE your updates!!! I have been trying for over a week now to install this update KB4054517 and it just sits there wanting to restart. I have used the so-called windows trouble shooter to no avail! I have tried the stand alone update. I am NOT doing a clean install and doing a restore point does NOT work, there's nothing wrong with my PC. it's your updates!

My PC is brand new, bought a few months ago and I hardly have anything installed on this PC. I had issues a short while back with one of your so-called "updates" and it did the same thing until people were complaining that it was NOT working! Then you threw out another fix and it worked. It is NOT my PC, it is you. Do something, this is not good!! FIX THIS, All the other updates get installed without any problems, it's THIS update that won't install!!

I agree! I have had issues with the last couple of "updates", I spend days trying to fix Microsoft's problems... as a software developer, if I was to provide defective updates as many times as they have I would have been fired from my job! Absolutely disgusting how they can push defective updates on us and take little or no responsibility to get them fixed for us..

this worked for my system:

Finally got it installed. This is what did it... <br><br> <br><br>According to this https://www.computerworld.com/article/3199077/microsoft-windows/windows-10-a-guide-to-the-updates.html <br><br> <br><br>The update progression from OS Build 16299.68 is via 16299.98 to 16299.125 <br><br> <br><br>So I manually updated using KB4051963 to OS Build 16299.98 and then manually installed KB4054517. <br><br>The router was turned off to stop the automatic updater which was trying to butt in. <br><br>Took a while but there were no further problems. <br><br>Don't know why KB4051963 was missing. <br><br>I would expect Cumulative updates to be designed to contain all previous update files. If that is the case then KB4054517 must be incomplete and is more like a "Delta" update. <br><br>This worked for me as well. Thanks! Damn thing wasted hours of my time.

I tried the same thing but couldn't get the 16299.98 build to install.. machine stays at build .64 and nothing I do can get the next to builds to install.. this is so flipping frustrating.. seriously considering moving away from Microsoft products... spending days trying to install after every push they do... terrible support!

I cant even get into windows. Takes me to diagnosing windows thing, fails to repair. I then try to do a reinstall, but so I can keep ALL OF MY VERY IMPORTANT FILES. But, windows error happens, saying it had problem installing windows. My only option, which i havent attempted, is a clean install. I have so many important files that were not backed up this past week as I didnt anticipate an official windows update would cripple my system. If the clean install fails bc of windows error, will Microsoft buy me a new computer?????
