Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB4054517 fails to install error 0x80070643

We just got our "second Tuesday" updates (12/12/2017) on our W10 machine running V1709.

The cumulative update KB4054517 failed with an error code of 0x80070643.

The only thing we've discovered so far is that this machine will not display our other 3 PC's on the network when we select "Network" in File Explorer.  But all three other PC's can "see" and access this PC no problem.  And we ran a batch backup job on the affected PC and it was able to copy files from all three other PC's.  So it's just a display problem in File Explorer -> Network.  

We've run Windows Update Troubleshooter and told it to Apply Fixes whenever it prompted us, and it DID report that it found and fixed three issues:

Potential Windows Update Database Error - Fixed

Windows Update Component Must Be Repaired - Fixed

Check for pending updates - Fixed

After exiting the Troubleshooter, we clicked on "Check for Updates" again and it said "Your device is up to date". 

We noticed that the build number after the "failed" update had changed to 16299.125.  So the system thinks it DID install something newer than it had before, but Windows Update thinks the cumulative patch failed to install.

BTW, the other "Second Tuesday" patches (Adobe Flash KB4053577 and Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool KB890830) both installed OK.

    Over and over. 

    Error 0x80070020

    kb4054517 gets to 48% in the restarts and setting up stages and then decides it has to

    rewind everything. Occasionally Windows Update thinks it has installed. But it always

    wants to reinstall and do a restart.

    I've removed Norton Internet Security. That didn't help.

    I've run the checker programs for windows update to see if it's working correctly.

    I've tried installing manually after turning off the windows update service.

    I've use scavenger programs if available to uninstall any remnants of malware bytes,

    bit defender and spybotsd, in case one of those programs is blocking the completed

    setting up windows process.

    The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

    I can see how that would be a recommendation derived from that.  OTOH if you knew which "file or directory" was causing something a problem there might be another explanation (than some inferred physical corruption, which would affect any random file).

    Hallo you all.

    These remarks were done by the MS software indeed. But after using the workaround, offered by MS, all failures do not exist -if so, ever.

    UPDATE :  My system is up-and-running after following the instructions (above) ☺ ☺ Took just 10 minutes or so.

    I'm getting the exact same problem. 

    The install gets to 99% then it freezes and nothign happens after 20 or so minutes i get an error.

    Everytime I shut down the computer it says 'WIndows is getting ready, Please don't turn off the system.' But there is no update installing because when it finally shuts down or boots up the update is still installing? I've tried disabling all windows updates through the services and the problem is still continuing to occur. 

    (I've reset PC 3 times now before I founf this article) PLEASE FIX.

    I've checked for drive errors and there were a couple (insignificant files), but the update installation still fails with the 0x80070570 error. So I've turned off Windows updates for 27 days and will try again at the end of January.
