I keep getting the error "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709 - Error 0xc0000005".  Any ideas?

Hi,

The error message System error 5 has occurred shows when you didn't run the Command Prompt as an administrator. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Type CMD.
  3. Right-click on it, then select Run as administrator.

Once you've open the elevated Command Prompt, type these commands one after another followed by Enter key:

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

net stop AppIDSvc

Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

net start AppIDSvc

Once done restart your PC and check if the issue is the same.

Hi,

There are several reasons why the error code 0xC0000005 occurs, such as corrupted system files, faulty drivers, or bad interactions between system programs. Also, one of the possible reason why this issue occurs is because there are still services that is running in the background. We recommend that you perform the steps provided by Kapil Arya MVP again. This time, we recommend that you add these additional commands****to stop and start Application Identity: net stop AppIDSvcand net start AppIDSvc. Enter these commands one after another:

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

net stop AppIDSvc

Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

net start AppIDSvc

Once done restart your PC and check if the issue is the same.

    My old Dell XPS Laptop finally updated from 1703 to 1709 after about a million tries since last fall. The 005  error and sometimes a 025 error would be common themes for these failures depending on trying ALL the suggested fixes. I have seven or so computers in the house and all updated except for this one that was kept on the kitchen table and used solely for family internet access, so there was no pressing need to go to 1709 and I was resigned to happily being stuck on 1703 and wondering if some day MS would eventually figure this out. I basically had given up and was tired of ISO installations, deleting directories, etc. etc. etc. Over the course of several months I would initiate the upgrade just to see if today might be the day. The upgrades would unfortunately fail at the very end of the process that would usually take about 45 minutes before returning an 005 error. However, at the end of March, I started getting more obnoxious reminders about my OS not being up to date and that I should do something about it.  So, on April 8 or so, I once again initiated the Windows update process and noticed that the screens had a different look. I seem to recall that a cumulative 1703 update was installed and then I was asked again to install the 1709 upgrade. Lo and behold, the 1709 Fall Creators update finally installed in the Spring of 2018! I'm not sure what the problem was, although I knew my Hard Drive had some bad sectors that could not be repaired, but everything was working and I never had any problems with updates until 1709. So,...no definitive solution, but the problem eventually worked itself out.

    I tried this but it didnt work. I've had my Windows 10 Update fail 8 times now with Error Code 0xc0000005.

    On occasions using my wife's profile on the same machine we have gotten further only to be told that we manually have to uninstall Infineon TPM Professional Package - which doesnt exist as an application or program to be removed. 

    It should be this difficult to be a Windows user?
