TSSTcorp CDDVDW SU-208GB not working after Fall Creators Update installed

Current driver is:   C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys

Provider:               Microsoft

Driver Date:          6/21/2006

Driver version:      10.0.16299.15 (WinBuild 160101.0800)

It seems very unusual that the driver is so old? And, I was curious about it being a 32-bit driver?

That is normal and the driver is 64-bit for 64-bit Operating System.

Is the drive showing up in Disk Management?

Also, the proper functioning of the drive may be dependent on the SATA driver so try updating to the latest SATA driver from Intel:

As a general precaution create a System Restore Point prior to updating SATA drivers.

If the problem persists try uninstalling the drive via the Device Manager, restart the computer and let Windows re-detect the drive.

Ok, if this is a 64-bit driver, why is it under system32? It may not matter, but it does not seem correct???  Anyway, I had already tried what you suggested but did it again just to be sure:

o    Yes, the device shows up under Disk Management as CD-ROM 0. It always shows No Media even when a optical disc, recordable or otherwise is inserted.

o    I had already updated the Intel RST and SATA driver to the latest available, but did it again to be sure. No difference.

o    I had previously tried removing the optical disc drive from the hardware configuration and restarting so Windows could discover the hardware and configure it. I did it again, as requested. No difference.

As previously indicated, this device was working fine until the Fall Creators Update of Windows 10 was forced on me and I cannot go back to the prior version because my C drive was corrupted during the installation attempt and I had to do a clean Windows install. Everything else appears to be working fine except for the optical disc drive and I would like to get it working again...

I am still open to suggestions.

Hi Janeane,

I have already tried contacting MSI technical support and they would only suggest restoring the system to it's previous state. Not very helpful. I do not understand why Microsoft finds it necessary to make these types of changes to the Windows internals and then FORCE the changes on us whether we want them or not.

Since I have had Windows 10 installed, I am not given ANY choice in the matter and am forced to take all updates. While I do not agree with this philosophy, I was not asked and not given any choice in the matter. With previous Windows versions, I would always wait until a update had been posted for quite a while before updating any of our production systems.

At this point, even if I were to reinstall a previous version of Windows, where my CD-ROM drive worked, what would prevent Windows Update from forcing this latest update on me again? I would end up right where I am now!

Can you provide the following information which may help determine any issue(s):

Windows Key + R > type msinfo32 in the "Open" box  > OK > File > Save > then save as an .nfo file

Then make the resulting .nfo file available via a public folder on OneDrive or similar site.

Also, can you do the following:

Windows Key + R > type eventvwr in the "Open" box > OK > expand "Custom Views" and then right-click "Administrative Events" > select "Save all events in Custom View As" and save as an .evtx file

Then make the resulting .evtx file available via a public folder on OneDrive or similar site.

Sorry that it has been a while since we last talked. Had to take care of some emergency family business, but I am back now.

I have checked and I find that a) the system will boot fine from my Win7 Pro installation DVD and it plays back audio CDs with no problem. This seems to indicate that the hardware is working. Just to make doubly sure, I purchased an external optical drive (USB powered, connected via USB3 port). It also plays audio CDs fine but I cannot see a DVD on this drive or the internal drive.

I would really like to know what else I can do to resolve this!
