TSSTcorp CDDVDW SU-208GB not working after Fall Creators Update installed

I read it between the lines, but you didn't directly say you tried "START, Settings, Update & Security, Troubleshoot, Hardware & Devices". Don't be overly optimistic, if it asks to do a reboot afterward. It asked me to do it, & I've got nothing to fix.

When you did that clean install of 1709 (which is when the DVD drive broke), did you happen to test it before installing all the 3rd-party apps? I know you said the drive wouldn't read a DVD in Safe Mode. So, that probably means it is not a 3rd-party driver at fault. But maybe try the following anyway, as it isn't tough to do...

Thank you for the info. I found and applied all of the available updates. All installed cleanly, but no effect on DVD drives.

It just strikes me as something very odd... Both the internal and USB connected optical drives can mount and play CDs normally, but neither will mound a DVD. This does not sound like hardware since both the internal and brand new external drives are affected.

What would prevent a DVD from completing the mount process?

It does say, "Addresses an issue that may cause some devices to stop responding or working when using applications, such as Cortana or Chrome, after installing the Windows 10 April 2018 Update." Did you get it yet? It is a lulu coming in, maybe it took 8 minutes of various spinning circles on various colored screens.

If that doesn't do it, we can BING your hardware IDs in Device Manager...

If that is the actual device name that shows up in Device Manager, it does appear to be somewhat different than mine which does work.

Yes, all Microsoft updates are current. I tried the fixes outlined in the article Janeane sent. I removed elbycdio.sys. I have been to the MSI site on a regular basis and have updated the bios to the latest posted and verified that I am using the latest versions of all drivers and firmware...

This is really a head-scratcher for me as well. I cannot see where something might be preventing DVD playback. On the odd chance that it was a SATA issue (some posts indicate that the optical drive will not work when connected to a secondary port), I tried the USB optical drive. In all cases, CDs play fine but DVDs will not mount.

I really did try everything that I could think of or was aware of before pestering the folks here...

Is there anything else you can think of?

OK. You did do the upgrade (my biggest hope), & it was no cure. Also, you went through that article Janeane posted up front, & it was no cure. You updated some drivers & deleted the rascal elbycdio.sys (which I don't have).

All the drivers interrelate. Compare what is at the site against Device Manager. If a greater version is at the site, first try to get it through Device Manager (search automatically). If that fails, take it from the site. I see you already have taken the latest BIOS "E1782IMS.122, 3/15/2018]" - what about all the other drivers, especially other firmware drivers?
