TSSTcorp CDDVDW SU-208GB not working after Fall Creators Update installed

When the Windows 10 Fall Creators update tried to install it corrupted my boot drive so I had to download the image from Microsoft and do a clean install on my MSI laptop. After the clean install of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, everything seems to be working fine except for my optical disc drive. It is a TSSTcorp CDDVDW SU-208GB with firmware level TM01 installed. It was working fine previously. The device shows up in Device Manager and everything says the device is working normally, has the latest correct driver, etc. When I put a disc in the drive, it will try starting up and then fall silent. I never see the optical disc drive on my windows desktop or in file manager. Any thoughts about what I can do to get this resolved?

"(1) My registry for that looks exactly like yours, except it has "(default)" in the top line where you've got "Standard". But that is inconsequential. Also, mine is entirely in English. So, there is no bug there, but may be elsewhere I guess."

    Hi PCR just PCR,

the quote above helped me to come to the decision to get my "TSSTcorp CDDVDW SU-208GB" changed at Fujitsu repair service. With the new drive, same type but different model, everything works just perfect.

Lesson learnt: With a desktop you always think of changing hardware elements as it is easy, with a laptop you hesitate because it nullifies the warranty. One should think of hardware flaws.

    Many thanks for your help.

    All the best

Yes, D:\ is my DVD/CD drive. But the upgrade to 1803 changed it to E:, & I changed it back.. I might also say, after the upgrade, things seem remarkably slower regarding the DVD. Even clicking for Properties could take minutes to happen. So I think I am not totally immune from 1803 evil doings regarding the DVD. After curing one disc with ChkDsk, it easily took 2 hours to scan it with Defender...

And afterward ChkDsk fixed a new error on it which I can't recall. But my files had copied over to it fine. I only use this as a secondary backup of top secret files.

    Hi,

    Many thanks.

    "However, "ChkDsk D: /F" was a cure."

    Was D:/ your CDDVD drive?

You are welcome to whatever I've got. Too bad KB4100403 was no cure. That's a lot of work you're going through. I hope it leads to a fix of the issue - or at least fixes something else accidentally.

    (1) My registry for that looks exactly like yours, except it has "(default)" in the top line where you've got "Standard". But that is inconsequential. Also, mine is entirely in English. So, there is no bug there, but may be elsewhere I guess.

    (2) Fujitsu may have discontinued the Lifebook A555/G, but they appear to continue to support it. I thought I saw 1803 mentioned there in a file description, but they all are 1709 now. Anyway, I do see the year 2018 mentioned in the Bluetooth & WLAN drivers...

    (3) I recall, when I did an automatic update at my Dell site, it did update 5 drivers including the BIOS. However, 7/so others at the site just sat there, until I took them manually. Did you check each one at the site against Device Manager? Did either Intel or Fujitsu update that SATA driver?

The only caution I'd add is to bypass a driver at the site that is for a device that does not appear in Device Manager. It could happen because all A555's may not be equipped the same. But probably the driver wouldn't install anyway in that case.

    (4) I'm having troubles with my own "TSSTcorp DVD+-RW SU-208GB", but nothing like what's going on with your "TSSTcorp CDDVDW SU-208GB". Suddenly I couldn't delete files from a DVD. And copying files to it just showed up in some kind of directory saying the copy was pending. However, "ChkDsk D: /F" was a cure. It said the DVD hadn't been closed properly.

    Hi,

Many thanks for your reply it was most helpful; although it did not solve the problem, it helped to spot it.

    1. According to Fujitsu I have got the newest Bios version.
    Titel Version Größe (Datum)
    Windows BIOS Update Utility - LIFEBOOK A555/G 1.20 4,42 MB (06.10.2015)
    Status Dokument Download
    <ul><br><li><span>Freigegeben für LIFEBOOK A555/G<br></span></li></ul><br>[released for LIFEBOOK A555/G]

Well, I must admit that the production of Fujitsu Lifebook A555/G was discontinued shortly after I had bought it; hence it might be possible that no new Bios Versions are compiled.

    1. Oops! It is 10.0.17134.1; you are right, it is typing error. Sorry.
    2. SATA driver version: 14.8.0.1042 (without -A), date: 04.11.2015, definitely older than the one you mention. See below under number 9, 10 and 11.
    3. True, it is 10.0.17134.1 everywhere.
    4. 2018-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4100403) was not here at midnight when I checked last, but now it has come, my system is updated; it did not solve the problem.
    5. Fujitsu support suggested exchanging the drive and did not tell me about http://support.ts.fujitsu.com/IndexDownload.asp
    • hence I could not imagine that a Fujitsu download site exists. Thanks for the link.

The Fujitsu Deskupdate FTS_DeskUpdate_4153859_1182252.exe automatically recognized and updated the following drivers: The Realtech high definition audio drive and the Fujitsu System Extension Utility driver. This did not solve the problem.

    1. On the Fujitsu discussion site, I found the tip to change the energy settings in case of problems with the CDDVD drives. Exasperated as I am I tried, but it did not solve the problem.
    2. Via https://www.intel.de/content/www/de/de/support/detect.html?_ga=2.228857305.497186565.1527154312-434251892.1527151857&erpm_id=7274118 , I got the Intel Driver and Support Assistant Installer.exe, which I ran and it provided me with the information that the system is updated.
    3. Then I did a scan with the Intel® System-Support-Utility for Windows SSU.exe available at

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293 and asked Intel support for a newer IDE ATA/ATAPI Intel(R) 9 Series Family SATA AHCI controller driver. They however send me back to Fujitsu because Fujitsu configured the divers, Intel only delivered the hardware.

According to Fujitsu I have got the newest driver:

    Titel Version (Datum) Größe
    Intel(R) Chipset Device Software 10.1.1.13(05.01.2016) 2,69 MB
    Status Dokument Download
Freigegeben für LIFEBOOK A555/G [released for LIVEBOOK A555/G]
    1. The Intel® System-Support-Utility for Windows lists all the internal system devices and found the following errors:

[Translation: The driver has found a controller error on \Device~]

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

This would make sense if it were the ATA/ATAPI Intel(R) 9 Series Family SATA AHCI controller

Driver causing the trouble as the external drive is controlled by the USB-controllers, which apparently work fine.

    1. In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi the following entries:

    Name              Type                           Data

Standard         REG_SZ                     (Wert nicht festgelegt) [Translation: Value not set/not specified]

    DisplayName  REG_SZ                     @mshdc.inf,%idechannel.DeviceDesc%,IDE Channel

    ErrorControl   REG_DWord              0x00000003 (3)

    Group              REG_SZ                     SCSI Miniport

    ImagePath      REG_DWORD            System32\drivers\atapi.sys

    Owners           REG_MULTI_SZ        mshdc.inf

    Start                REG_DWORD            0x00000000 (0)

    Tag                 REG_DWORD            0x0000001d (29)

    Type                REG_DWORD            0x00000001 (1)

Spreading atapi, I found a registry entry for an atapi override:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi*StartOverride*

    Name              Type                           Data

Standard         REG_SZ                     (Wert nicht festgelegt) [Translation: Value not set/not specified]

    0                     REG_DWord              0x00000003 (3)

It seems that the atapi override works for the hard drive but not for the CDDVD drive.

Might it be that there is a bug in the registry preventing the atapi controller from working flawless?

    You help is most appreciated.

    Lynx
