Getting error 0x80070BC2 doing Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4056892)

@DaveyK38 , the response from MDH_999 is spot on. The suggestion is to effectively delete any windows update your machine has ever downloaded and then re-download them again. It's basically a clean install of all windows updates. This takes a very long time and will require a large amount of downloading. For some people on slower connections, this can take all day and night. You'll go through a number of long reboots as well.

One other minor tip if you perform the steps from that article. If you can't delete files in that directory, try restarting your computer and then following the steps to stop Windows Updates. Once you run windows updates, it puts locks on files in that directory.

Does this overwrite the existing installation? Will I have to reinstall programs that I have installed?

If trying to install the update manually then i have one solution that will work right away.

Although this may seem scary but we are basically hoing to reinstall windows.

what you need to do is download the windows 10 media creation tool from here:

US

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

once downloaded run the installer and you will have 2 options download an ISO etc and "Upgrade this pc".

Even thought you may already have windows 10 what this will do is reinstall windows like if you upgraded from windows 7/8 and in the process will download any updates so when it installs it will have most updates (like the one that is causing you trouble). Just make sure that before you install you make sure the setting (keep my files) which should be automatically enabled is checked. once installed all of your problems should be gone!

NOTE: one thing that is lost will be your desktip background so make sure you have a copy of that

I'm very sorry to hear you're still having a problem.  For clarity, you performed both of the following?

a) You ran the "fix windows update" procedure; and

b) You set the 4 system services above start mode to "Auto".

If you did both and the update is still failing there is one more thing you can try before attempting an in place windows install.

Search this forum or google the topic "deleting file from the folder c:/windows/softwaredistribution".   Sometimes Windows Update gets confused about what to do when there's an issues with files in this folder.  If you are an inexperienced user you might not want to do this or you could seek help from a more experienced friend.

My problem with the failure of Windows to update was solved when I set the 4 system service's start mode to "Auto".  HOWEVER, I had previously run the "fix windows update" procedure and deleted the files from c:/windows/softwaredistribution so I can't be sure if it was a combination of steps that solved the problem.
